Google’s Gemini Can Now Make Calls for You With New ‘Call for Me’ Feature

Google has introduced “Call for Me,” an AI-powered Gemini feature that can make phone calls on behalf of users, expanding the company’s push into autonomous AI assistants. The experimental feature initially rolls out exclusively to Pixel 11 owners in the United States who subscribe to Gemini and use the beta version of Google’s Phone app for Android. The move also places Google alongside other AI agents, including Meta’s Muse and Instinct, which offer similar calling capabilities.

Unlike earlier Google features that could assist with phone calls in limited ways, Call for Me can, with user approval, share personal information during conversations and complete more complex tasks. Gemini can call businesses to check product availability, make restaurant reservations, reschedule appointments, or place items on hold, while users monitor the conversation through a live transcript and can intervene at any time. The AI uses the user’s personal phone number and can identify itself to businesses, navigate automated phone menus, wait on hold, and handle conversations with people on the other end.

The feature builds on years of Google experimentation with AI-assisted calling, dating back to the company’s demonstration of Google Assistant making a salon reservation at an I/O developer conference. Google later introduced “Ask for Me,” which allowed Gemini to call businesses to obtain information about prices or services, while Pixel users have also had access to “Hold for Me,” “Talk to a Live Rep,” and “Direct My Call” for navigating phone systems and waiting on hold.

Google says Call for Me will initially remain a small-scale experiment because real-world conversations are unpredictable, giving the company time to refine how Gemini handles the nuances of live calls before considering a broader rollout.
