Gambia Welcomes First Flight of 2025/26 Tourism Season with Cultural Festivities
The 2025/26 tourism season officially kicked off in The Gambia with the arrival of its maiden flight at the Banjul International Airport on Saturday, marking the beginning of another exciting season for the nation’s tourism industry. The inaugural flight, operated by Gambia Experience, touched down at around 1:30 pm carrying 189 passengers, who were warmly welcomed with a vibrant cultural display and traditional performances celebrating the country’s rich heritage and famed hospitality.
The event was graced by Minister of Tourism and Culture Abdou Jobe, senior officials of the Gambia Tourism Authority (GTA), and members of its Governing Board, who joined airport staff and cultural troupes in welcoming the tourists. The ceremony officially heralded the start of what is expected to be a lively and promising season for Destination Gambia, renowned for its sun-kissed beaches, historical sites, and friendly people.
Speaking after the ceremony, Minister Jobe expressed delight at the successful arrival of the first flight, emphasizing that extensive preparations had been made by the GTA and its partners to ensure a smooth season.
He noted that tourism remains a collective national responsibility, urging Gambians to play their part in maintaining and enhancing the country’s image. “We are all selling the country,” he said, encouraging stakeholders to capitalize on The Gambia’s ideal climate, safety, and the impeccable smiles of its people. Reaffirming the country’s brand as the ‘Smiling Coast of Africa,’ the Minister called for continued collaboration to deliver exceptional experiences for all visitors.
Batch Fye, Chairman of the GTA Board of Directors, echoed this sentiment, reassuring travelers of The Gambia’s legendary hospitality. “Go to East Africa for the animals, come to West Africa for the people,” he said, highlighting the warmth and friendliness that set The Gambia apart.
British High Commissioner to The Gambia, Harriet King, also shared her admiration, revealing that during her two tenures in the country, she had grown fond of its people and culture. She described The Gambia as a vibrant destination that offers much more than just sunshine, from amazing food and wildlife to stunning beaches and warm weather. She expressed excitement that the maiden flight originated from the United Kingdom, noting the destination’s growing popularity among British holidaymakers.
Oumie Sise, General Manager of Discovery Tours, reminded visitors that The Gambia’s attractions extend well beyond its beaches. She encouraged tourists to explore its diverse cultural, natural, and historical offerings.
Among the arriving tourists was Tony from Manchester, UK, who shared his first impressions with enthusiasm. “It’s really amazing,” he said. “I’ve heard so much about the country, the people, the beaches, the food, and now I’m finally here to experience it all.”
The arrival of the maiden flight signals a strong start to The Gambia’s tourism calendar, reflecting renewed optimism for the sector as it continues to position itself as one of West Africa’s most welcoming destinations.
