Galatasaray's Coach Pleads with UEFA for Victor Osimhen's Champions League Rule Adjustment
Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk has formally appealed to UEFA, urging a review of a long-standing Champions League rule concerning yellow card accumulation.
This appeal comes at a critical time for the club, with star striker Victor Osimhen and several other key players, along with Buruk himself, teetering on the brink of suspension ahead of their crucial Champions League clash against Liverpool.
Victor Osimhen, a pivotal attacking force for Galatasaray and the club's all-time highest-scoring foreign player in Champions League history, is currently on a disciplinary tightrope.
Having already accumulated two yellow cards from earlier matches against Atletico Madrid and Juventus, a third booking in the upcoming game against Liverpool at RAMS Park would automatically result in a one-match suspension, forcing him to miss the return leg at Anfield.
Under current UEFA regulations, any player who receives three yellow cards from the league phase onward, without having already received a red card, will incur a one-match suspension.
Subsequent odd-numbered yellow cards (fifth, seventh, etc.) also lead to additional one-match bans. These yellow cards are only cleared after the quarter-final stage, meaning they carry through the initial knockout rounds.
Coach Buruk argues that this rule is outdated and no longer fair given the recent changes to the Champions League format.
He highlighted that the rule was established when teams played significantly fewer matches in the group stage (six games) before proceeding directly to the Round of 16.
The current expanded format now requires teams to play eight matches in the league phase, along with an additional knockout round before the Round of 16. Buruk believes this increased number of games warrants an adjustment to the yellow card threshold.
Buruk expressed his concern during a pre-match press conference, suggesting a reduction in the yellow card count for a ten-match period.
He pointed out that with seven Galatasaray players on the verge of suspension, including four frequently playing defenders, the goalkeeper, and two attackers, managing team selection has become exceptionally complicated.
“The most difficult part for us is that four of our most frequently playing players in the same position in defense, our goalkeeper, and two attackers are on the verge,” Buruk stated, emphasizing the need to avoid unnecessary bookings while still competing effectively.
Beyond Osimhen, other critical Galatasaray players facing potential suspension include goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır, defenders Ismail Jakobs, Davinson Sánchez, Abdülkerim Bardakcı, and Roland Sallai, as well as forward Noa Lang.
Coach Buruk himself is also at risk; a yellow card for him would mean a touchline ban for the return leg in England.
The disciplinary concerns are not limited to Galatasaray. Liverpool also has players one booking away from suspension, specifically Conor Bradley and Curtis Jones.
Injured striker Alexander Isak will not feature in the match. The two teams have previously met in this season's Champions League league phase, with Galatasaray securing a 1-0 victory at home, a match in which Victor Osimhen scored the winning penalty in the 16th minute.
