Future of Ram Unveiled: All-New SUV with Hybrid Power Roars to Life in 2028!

The Ram brand, historically recognized for its robust trucks but lacking a dedicated SUV since its separation from Dodge, is poised to introduce its first-ever SUV in 2028. This significant development was announced by Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa during an October 30 briefing with Wall Street analysts, where he conveyed Ram's intention to develop a "much more comprehensive product range." This new SUV, which will be assembled in Michigan, is slated to debut alongside the revived Dakota midsize pickup, also set for a 2028 launch with assembly planned in Ohio. This initiative marks a pivotal expansion for Ram, finally adding an SUV to its lineup after nearly two decades.
A key feature of this upcoming Ram SUV is its diverse powertrain strategy. In addition to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) options, the vehicle will also offer a range-extending electric vehicle (REEV) powerplant. While specific details remain undisclosed, the REEV option is anticipated to leverage technology akin to that found in the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. This could entail a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine functioning primarily as a generator for a battery pack, with electric motors providing propulsion. Such a configuration could deliver an impressive 500 miles of range, up to 647 horsepower, and 620 lb-ft of torque, ensuring a quiet operation in "EV mode."
For consumers preferring conventional power, the ICE variants of the Ram SUV are expected to incorporate Stellantis's advanced Hurricane engines. The Hurricane 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4, capable of producing 324 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, is a potential candidate. However, it is considered more likely that the SUV will feature the Hurricane 3.0-liter twin-turbo I-6, available in a "Standard Output" tune offering 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque, or a more potent "High Output" calibration yielding 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft. There is also speculation that the recently revived Hemi V-8, complete with its e-torque mild-hybrid system from the Ram 1500, might be an option for this new SUV.
The manufacturing location offers further clues regarding the vehicle's underlying architecture. The Ram SUV will be constructed at the Warren Truck Assembly plant in Warren, Michigan, the same facility responsible for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. This co-production suggests that the new Ram SUV may share the body-on-frame STL Frame platform with the Grand Wagoneer, although Stellantis has maintained discretion regarding these structural specifics. When queried for additional details, a Ram spokesperson stated that CEO Filosa's comments "stand on their own" and declined further elaboration.
This strategic expansion of Ram's product portfolio, which includes both the new SUV and the Dakota, is integral to Stellantis's substantial four-year, $13-billion investment in U.S. production. This investment is projected to generate up to 900 new jobs across both Michigan and Ohio, providing a significant economic boost to these regions. The introduction of a dedicated Ram SUV represents a new chapter for the brand, aiming to attract a wider market segment with a versatile and robust vehicle offering.
