The name "Ranchero" surfaced through a trademark filing last August, hinting at Ford's strategic direction. A recent behind-the-scenes look at the automaker's Electric Vehicle Development Center (EVDC) in Long Beach, California, offered a glimpse of the camouflaged truck. Notably, its A-pillars support a windshield that is far more steeply raked than typically seen on a pickup. This design choice is critical for improving aerodynamics, thereby enhancing efficiency and extending the vehicle's range. The Ranchero is expected to feature a crew-cab configuration with four full-size doors, and Ford has indicated it will offer more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4, emphasizing practicality and comfort.

The significance of the Ranchero extends beyond its features; it represents Ford's aggressive push into an untested, yet potentially lucrative, market segment. While other automakers, apart from Ford, have not yet seriously outlined plans for affordable EV pickups, Ford clearly recognizes the immense opportunity. The company aims to replicate the success of its compact Maverick, offering similar size and utility advantages but with zero fuel consumption. This initiative also marks a learning curve from the F-150 Lightning, whose production ceased recently. Where the Lightning faced challenges in affordability, the Ranchero is designed to succeed, tapping into the overwhelming consumer interest for more budget-friendly electric vehicles, especially in the absence of federal EV tax credits that once offset higher prices.

Underpinning the Ranchero will be Ford’s next-generation universal electric vehicle (UEV) platform, making it the first vehicle to utilize this new architecture that will support various body styles. The UEV program is a substantial undertaking, involving approximately 500 employees, including engineers recruited from prominent tech and EV companies such as Apple, Rivian, and Tesla. The EVDC Long Beach office plays a crucial role, intentionally operating with organizational and geographical autonomy from Ford's Michigan headquarters, fostering innovation.

To meet its ambitious $30,000 price target, the Ranchero will incorporate a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. While less energy-dense than nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) batteries, LFP chemistry offers a lower cost solution. Furthermore, Ford plans to manufacture the motors in-house, a strategic move to keep production costs down. At launch, the truck will offer a choice between rear-wheel drive with a permanent-magnet motor or all-wheel drive, featuring an additional induction motor for the front axle. Although exclusively sold as a four-door crew cab, customers will have the option of multiple battery packs, allowing them to prioritize either ultimate affordability or extended range.
