Foo Fighters Unleash New Era: Ilan Rubin Joins on Drums, New Music and Live Debut Announced!

The acclaimed rock band Foo Fighters made a surprise announcement on Friday night, September 12, revealing plans for an all-ages show at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo, California, on Saturday, September 13. This intimate gig at the 900-capacity venue is particularly significant as it marks the band's first official live performance with their new drummer, Ilan Rubin.
Ilan Rubin, formerly of Nine Inch Nails, joined the Dave Grohl-led group earlier this summer, following the departure of veteran session and live drummer Josh Freese in May 2023. Freese had joined the Foo Fighters after the tragic passing of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins. The band had been off the road since September 2024, making this upcoming performance a highly anticipated return to the stage for fans.
Alongside the show poster shared on Instagram, the Foo Fighters included an audio snippet, which fans quickly identified as a teaser for what appears to be a newly recorded track. The riff-heavy sound garnered enthusiastic reactions from fans, with comments like, “Yeeees this is the sound we like … Good heavy riffs! The boys are back to what they’re good at and it feels good!!” Some fans even speculated that the track might have roots in the band’s past live sets, noting similarities to a jam played between songs years ago. The band also marked its 30th anniversary in July with the release of a new track titled “Today’s Song.”
Leading up to the San Luis Obispo show, the Foo Fighters engaged their audience with cryptic teasers on social media. These included a playful nod to “Weird Al” Yankovic, whose parody song “My Bologna” was recorded on the city’s Cal Poly campus in 1979. Another teaser featured a photo of Dave Grohl seemingly wearing a T-shirt from Boo Boo Records, a beloved local record store, further building anticipation for the California performance.
In addition to this unexpected San Luis Obispo show, the Foo Fighters are set to embark on a series of international performances. Their upcoming schedule includes shows in Indonesia on October 2, Singapore on October 4, Japan with dates on October 7, 8, and 10, and a performance in Mexico City on November 14. The band's 11th studio album, “But Here We Are,” released in 2023, was their first new music since the passing of Taylor Hawkins, continuing their musical journey despite significant changes.
