Fly High with Crypto: Emirates Takes Bitcoin Onboard for Payments!
Emirates airline now accepts Bitcoin and other digital assets for flight bookings, partnering with Crypto.com to cater to a digitally fluent generation. This initiative supports Dubai's Cashless Strategy, aiming for a significant increase in digital transactions by 2026.
Dubai-based airline Emirates has announced that customers can now pay for flights using Bitcoin and other digital assets, facilitated through a partnership with Crypto.com. This move allows travelers to book flights by leveraging Crypto.com’s payment feature, a collaboration that was initially announced last year.
Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, stated that this initiative reflects the evolving preferences of a younger, digitally fluent generation. He highlighted that these customers primarily manage their finances and plan journeys from their phones, expecting airlines to adapt to these modern digital trends. Emirates had first hinted at plans to incorporate Bitcoin payments back in 2022, and this latest development expands the options for Crypto.com customers to utilize various digital assets for their transactions.
Under the new system, travelers with an existing Crypto.com account can select the “Crypto.com Pay” option during checkout when making bookings via emirates.com or through the Emirates App. Currently, this payment option is available exclusively to eligible UAE residents for bookings that are priced and settled in Emirati Dirham.
The technical integration of this payment system is managed through Crypto.com’s Dubai-licensed entity. Crypto.com proudly notes that this entity was the first virtual asset service provider to obtain a Stored Value Facilities license from the Central Bank of the UAE, underscoring the regulatory compliance of the service.
This launch also aligns with broader governmental objectives in Dubai. It supports Dubai’s Cashless Strategy, a key component of the D33 Economic Agenda, which aims to achieve 90% digital transactions across the emirate’s government and private sectors by the end of 2026. This initiative follows previous digital payment advancements, including an earlier partnership between Emirates and Dubai Finance, as well as Crypto.com’s own agreement with Dubai Finance to facilitate digital payments for government services.
