Fly High, Stay Connected: Kenya Airways Announces In-Flight Wi-Fi Rollout by 2027!

Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced plans to commence the installation of onboard Wi-Fi services across its long-haul aircraft fleet, with the rollout scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2027. This strategic move by the national carrier aims to significantly enhance the passenger experience by providing internet connectivity during flights.

According to Acting Managing Director and CEO George Kamal, the initial phase of the rollout will prioritize aircraft operating on key long-haul international routes. These include destinations such as London, Paris, New York (JFK), China, and Amsterdam. Following this initial deployment, the Wi-Fi installation will subsequently be extended to aircraft serving shorter routes within KQ's network.

Kamal explained the phased approach, stating, "From Q2 2027, one aircraft--every aircraft comes into the hangar we start installing one by one. We'll start with the long range first which is London, Paris, JFK, China, and Amsterdam." He also noted that KQ already possesses one Boeing 777 aircraft equipped with Wi-Fi, which is expected to help mitigate the initial costs associated with the broader rollout. The presence of this already-equipped aircraft suggests a readiness and a potential cost advantage for the airline in its implementation process.

Despite the clear benefits for passengers, the primary hurdle to widespread Wi-Fi installation across the entire fleet is the substantial upfront investment required. Kamal disclosed that the estimated cost for equipping KQ's current fleet with onboard Wi-Fi connectivity ranges from $20 million to $22 million. This significant investment underscores the airline's commitment to modernizing its services and meeting evolving passenger expectations.

KQ's initiative comes at a time when in-flight connectivity has become an increasingly standard offering in the airline industry. Currently, approximately 70 percent of commercial airlines globally provide Wi-Fi services to their passengers. By introducing this service, Kenya Airways aims to align itself with global industry trends, allowing passengers on long-haul flights to access internet services while airborne, before the service becomes available across the rest of its fleet.
