First Look: Sophie Turner Unleashes Bold New Lara Croft in Prime Video's 'Tomb Raider'

Lara Croft is officially returning to the screen as production is now underway on Amazon MGM Studios' highly anticipated Prime Video series, "Tomb Raider." The series, based on the iconic video game franchise, marks a new chapter for the legendary adventurer. To celebrate this milestone, Amazon MGM Studios released a first-look image featuring Sophie Turner in her role as Lara Croft, sporting classic gear, confirming her highly speculated casting.
Alongside Sophie Turner, Amazon MGM Studios has also confirmed several other key cast members. Jason Isaacs will portray Atlas DeMornay, Lara’s uncle, while Sigourney Weaver joins the cast as Evelyn Wallis, a powerful and enigmatic figure. The series will also feature Martin Bobb-Semple as Zip, Lara’s loyal tech support and closest ally; Bill Paterson as Winston, the Croft family’s long-serving butler; and Jack Bannon as Gerry, Lara’s pilot and resident snack enthusiast. John Heffernan is cast as David, an overworked government official who finds himself drawn into Lara’s world. Further additions to the ensemble include Celia Imrie as Francine, a sophisticated British Museum executive; Paterson Joseph as Thomas Warner, a senior government fixer; Sasha Luss as Sasha, a formidable new rival; Juliette Motamed as Georgia, a meticulous museum curator; and August Wittgenstein as Lukas, an illegal raider with a complex past linked to Lara.
The "Tomb Raider" franchise has a rich history across various media since Lara Croft's debut in video games in 1996. The character first leaped to live-action cinema with "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" in 2001, starring Angelina Jolie as the adventurer, followed by "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life" in 2003. These films achieved financial success and are also notable for their impressive supporting casts. The 2001 film featured Jon Voight as Lord Richard Croft, Iain Glen as Manfred Powell, Daniel Craig as Alex West, and Noah Taylor as Bryce. The 2003 sequel included Gerard Butler as Terry Sheridan, Ciarán Hinds as Jonathan Reiss, Djimon Hounsou as Kosa, and Til Schweiger as Sean.
The franchise was later rebooted in 2018 with "Tomb Raider," which starred Alicia Vikander and adopted a more grounded, survival-oriented approach, drawing inspiration from the modern video game trilogy. This film also boasted a strong supporting cast, including Dominic West as Richard Croft, Walton Goggins as Mathias Vogel, Daniel Wu as Lu Ren, Kristin Scott Thomas as Ana Miller, Nick Frost as Alan, and Hannah John-Kamen as Sophie.
