Film Buff Fave Faces Fate: Letterboxd Risks Becoming Another Rotten Tomatoes

There was a time when the popular film review aggregation website, Rotten Tomatoes, served as a genuinely helpful resource for moviegoers. This era predated several significant changes, including the introduction of audience reviews, the rise of coordinated troll campaigns, and the implementation of weighted scoring systems that led to confusing outcomes, such as a film receiving a five out of ten score being categorized as both "Fresh" and "Rotten." These developments marked a turning point in the platform's perceived objectivity and utility.

The transformation of Rotten Tomatoes also closely followed its corporate acquisitions. Initially, it was acquired by IGN, which itself was a subsidiary of the Fox Corporation. Later, the platform was swallowed by Comcast. In a more recent development, Comcast divested its non-streaming entities, including Rotten Tomatoes, forming a new entity known as Versant. This strategic decision by Comcast was driven by the perceived failure of these non-streaming assets to provide the growth that shareholders desired.

The cumulative effect of these changes and acquisitions has resulted in a platform that appears to be more favorable to studios and their commercial interests than to an impartial assessment of the quality of their work. A concerning trend has emerged where aggregated scores on the site grow steadily higher each year, potentially skewing audience perception. Furthermore, the platform has seen instances where supposed audience reviews have been used to "quality-wash" certain entities or individuals, such as in the example of Melania, highlighting a significant erosion of trust and integrity in the review system.
