FIFA Hammer Drops: Bafana Bafana's 2026 World Cup Dream Takes a Hit with Forfeit Sanction

South Africa's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been severely impacted after FIFA officially docked points from the national team, Bafana Bafana. The sanction stems from fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, a 28-year-old midfielder, in their March 21, 2025, qualifier against Lesotho in Polokwane. Mokoena, having accumulated two yellow cards, should have been serving a suspension for that match, a breach of Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the 2026 Preliminary Competition Regulations.
The consequences of FIFA's Disciplinary Committee ruling are significant. The 2-0 victory initially secured by South Africa has been overturned and recorded as a 3-0 forfeiture in favour of Lesotho. This decision has caused South Africa to lose three crucial points, stripping them of their top spot in Group C. Benin has now leapfrogged Bafana Bafana to lead the group, dramatically altering the qualification landscape. Furthermore, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has been ordered to pay a fine of CHF 10,000 (approximately R220,000, $12,500, or £9,340), and Teboho Mokoena has received a formal warning.
Before this ruling, South Africa held 17 points from 8 games, with Benin trailing on 14. Following the deduction, South Africa now stands at 14 points, behind Benin on goal difference or head-to-head records. This development has also reignited the qualification aspirations of Nigeria and Rwanda, both now just three points adrift of Benin and South Africa in Group C, where only the group winner is guaranteed a spot in the next year's tournament.
The ruling has intensified scrutiny on SAFA and coach Hugo Broos’ staff for what is being termed an administrative oversight. SAFA has expressed deep disappointment with the outcome, describing it as
