FG Greenlights Ondo Deep Sea Port, Governor Aiyedatiwa Hails Industrial Boom

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has announced that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has officially approved the revalidation of the state’s deep sea port licence. Governor Aiyedatiwa described this pivotal development as a significant milestone destined to drive industrialisation and attract substantial investments into the state. The announcement was made on Friday during his address to All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders at the final expanded quarterly meeting for 2025, held at the International Culture and Event Centre, The Dome, in Akure.
The Governor clarified that the licence, which was initially secured from the Federal Government during his tenure as deputy governor, encountered unforeseen delays. The primary setback stemmed from a naming error within the original business case, specifically regarding the potential investor. "There was an error in terms of the name of the potential investor. It created setbacks because the licence was not in the name of Deep Sea Port Limited. We had to start new processes and prepare a brand-new full business case," Governor Aiyedatiwa explained, outlining the meticulous process undertaken to rectify the anomaly.
The proposed deep sea port is strategically located in Erunona, within the Ilaje local government area, a region distinguished by Ondo State's longest coastline, offering an unparalleled gateway to global trade. The corridor encompassing the port is envisioned as a vibrant industrial hub, slated to host a variety of major projects. These include chemical plants dedicated to producing fertilisers, the Sunshine Petroleum Zone, and a modular refinery with an impressive 500,000-barrel capacity. Governor Aiyedatiwa confirmed that these ambitious projects are currently at various planning and development stages, with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) already signed, land allocated, and preliminary work completed. He further emphasized the state's readiness for large-scale investments by revealing that construction on the modular refinery has already commenced.
Infrastructure development is a cornerstone of the administration’s strategy. Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted ongoing efforts to dualise roads leading to key industrial zones and implement various modernisation projects across the state. In anticipation of a significant population increase spurred by these developments, comprehensive preparations for new residential, educational, and hospitality facilities are actively underway. Furthermore, the administration has recorded substantial social achievements, including the completion or near completion of 412 primary healthcare centres, the provision of ambulances to all local governments, and a concerted focus on prioritising the welfare of medical doctors.
Security remains a paramount concern for the administration, with 512 personnel strategically deployed across the state, supported by advanced command and control centres to ensure effective oversight. To reinforce grassroots governance and community engagement, traditional rulers have been prioritised, benefiting from enhanced salaries and improved mobility. These measures collectively aim to strengthen local administration and stability.
Addressing the political landscape, Governor Aiyedatiwa passionately urged for unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing that personal ambitions should not be allowed to fracture the party's cohesion. He drew a parallel to his own governorship primary experience, noting, "Even if your aspirant does not secure a ticket, it should not divide the party. Eight of 15 aspirants supported me immediately, and the others eventually joined. That is the way it should be." He also extended this call for unity towards the upcoming 2027 presidential election, underscoring the importance of a unified front.
Linking state progress to broader national reforms, the Governor articulated that improved fiscal policies at the federal level have empowered Ondo State to channel significant investments into critical infrastructure, security, and industrial projects, while simultaneously making strides in debt reduction. He explained the strategic approach: "We have started with infrastructure and security to attract investors. Once the port, refinery, and petrochemical plants are operational, we can access further funding to support mega projects." Looking ahead, Governor Aiyedatiwa announced that February 2026 will mark the first anniversary of the elected administration, an occasion to be celebrated with a major investment summit designed to showcase industrial opportunities to a global audience. He affirmed a commitment to inclusive development, ensuring that all local government areas will benefit from these transformative projects, with the Native Lookout hosting assets poised to revolutionise the state’s fortunes.
The Governor's efforts received commendation from various stakeholders present at the meeting. Hon. Isaac Kekemeke, the Southwest APC Vice Chairman, lauded Governor Aiyedatiwa for his humility and inclusive leadership, highlighting the expansion of party representation from 10 to 60 delegates per local government. Dr. Tunji Abayomi praised the administration's notable achievements, including the consistent quarterly Stakeholders’ Meetings and the establishment of the Governorship Advisory Council, noting last week’s inaugural dialogue between state party executives and the government as an unprecedented step. Chief Jamiu Ekungba also commended the administration, appealing to stakeholders to consistently speak positively about the governor’s diligent work, stating, "When a man is making an effort… and you don’t say good things about him, God will judge you."
