Newcastle United vs. Manchester City, The Ultimate Showdown!
Newcastle take on Manchester City in arguably the standout FA Cup fifth round tie.
This is the fifth meeting between the two sides already this season and there’s the possibility of a sixth as they are on opposite sides of the Champions League draw.
This match is into a shaping momentum for both teams as they head into the latter stages of the season.
Fans can watch the match on TNT Sports 1 in the UK, Peacock in the U.S., Jio Hotstar in India, and Stan Sport in Australia. It will also be available through ESPN for live coverage.
Kick-off is set for Saturday, March 7, at 8 p.m. GMT (3 p.m. ET; 1:30 a.m. IST on March 8; 7 a.m. AEDT on March 8).
The match will be played at St. James' Park, with Sam Barrott as the referee and John Brooks in charge of VAR.
Both teams have injury problems ahead of this FA Cup match.
Newcastle United will miss defenders Emil Krafth (knee), Tino Livramento (hamstring), and Lewis Miley (knee).
Midfielder Bruno Guimarães is out with a muscle injury, Jacob Ramsey is suspended, and forward Nick Woltemade is doubtful with illness.
Manchester City will be without Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic (both ankle injuries), while Max Alleyne and Nico O'Reilly are doubtful with minor knocks.
Newcastle made headlines by winning without their key player Bruno Guimarães for the first time since he joined.
They beat Manchester United even with ten men for a whole half, ending three straight home losses at St James' Park. The win could give the team a big confidence boost and turn their season around.
Erling Haaland’s recent form is worrying for Manchester City.
Since January 2026, he’s scored only four goals in 15 games and struggled in key matches.
He didn’t score or assist in the EFL Cup semifinal against Newcastle United, and looked off after a minor injury against Nottingham Forest.
Manager Pep Guardiola now faces a tough choice: push Haaland to start and risk his fitness, rest him for the UEFA Champions League clash with Real Madrid, or slowly ease him back to form.
Meanwhile, Omar Marmoush has been sharp against Newcastle, scoring five goals and assisting once in four games—an option Guardiola could lean on.
This will be the fifth time Manchester City and Newcastle United face each other in a competitive match this season, and by now both sides know each other very well.
City currently lead the head-to-head record with three wins to Newcastle’s one, but none of the games have been easy.
Each meeting has been closely contested for long periods, suggesting another tight battle could be on the cards.
With Newcastle boosted by their impressive mid-week performance, the atmosphere at St. James’ Park is expected to be electric.
Manchester City’s defense and confidence have looked shaky this season.
Even with Marc Guéhi strengthening the backline, the team has still shown weaknesses, especially in recent matches against Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.
This City side doesn’t feel as dominant as previous teams under Pep Guardiola, which were known for controlling games and limiting opponents’ chances.
The current squad looks more vulnerable and less certain of victory.
That is exactly what Newcastle United will try to take advantage of.
Historically, Manchester City and Newcastle United have played 10 times in the FA Cup. Newcastle has six wins, while City has four, including the last two meetings.
This season, City also knocked Newcastle out of the League Cup semifinals, continuing their recent success against them. In fact, only two teams have ever eliminated City from both the FA Cup and the League Cup in the same season—Wimbledon in 1987–88 and Arsenal in 2007–08.
City have also been very strong in the FA Cup in recent years, winning 18 of their last 20 matches. Their only losses came in the 2024 final against Manchester United and the 2025 final against Crystal Palace.
