Explosive Charges: Three Arrested in Arson Attack on Jewish Charity Ambulances in London

Three individuals have been formally charged in connection with an alleged arson attack that targeted Jewish volunteer ambulances in north-west London. Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, both British nationals from Leyton, along with a 17-year-old boy, a dual British and Pakistani national residing in Walthamstow, face charges of arson being reckless as to whether life would be endangered. These charges stem from an incident where four ambulances belonging to Hatzola, a volunteer-led ambulance service primarily operating in the Golders Green area, were deliberately set ablaze in the early hours of March 23. The severity of the attack was heightened as gas canisters stored within the vehicles reportedly exploded.
The arrests of the three suspects took place on a Wednesday at various locations across east London. Subsequently, officers from Counter Terrorism Policing London (CTPL) conducted searches at these addresses as part of their ongoing investigation. Despite the Counter Terrorism Policing unit leading the inquiry due to the specific circumstances of the incident, the Metropolitan Police clarified that the incident has not been officially declared as terrorism. Iqbal, Khan, and the unnamed 17-year-old are scheduled to appear before Westminster magistrates court on Saturday to face their charges.
Commander Helen Flanagan, who heads CTPL and is overseeing the investigation, expressed gratitude for the robust community support received since the "appalling attack." She affirmed the continuous efforts to investigate and identify those responsible, stating that the investigation has now reached a stage where charges have been laid. Commander Flanagan also reiterated CTPL's commitment to collaborating closely with local policing colleagues to ensure public safety. In relation to the broader investigation, two men previously arrested on March 25 have been released on bail until late-April, pending further inquiries.
Local community concerns, particularly within Jewish communities during the Passover festival period, remain high following the attack. Det Ch Supt Luke Williams, who is responsible for policing in north-west London, acknowledged these anxieties. In response, an enhanced and tailored policing plan has been implemented, focusing on vulnerable areas not only in Golders Green but across the entirety of London. This comprehensive plan involves the deployment of a significant number of additional officers, including specialist personnel and capabilities, alongside local officers. Highly visible armed police patrols are also part of this strategy, intended to serve as a deterrent to anyone intending to cause harm to communities. This heightened security activity is ongoing and will continue in the coming days to protect residents, disrupt potential offenders, and detect criminal activity.
