Eurovision Goes Global! Asian Edition Set for 2026 Debut

The globally renowned Eurovision Song Contest is expanding its reach to Asia, with its inaugural Asian edition scheduled to take place in Bangkok on November 14. This significant move marks a new chapter for the annual musical extravaganza, which will initially feature ten countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. More participating nations are expected to be announced in due course, signaling a robust entry into the Asian market.
Contest director Martin Green emphasized the historical significance of this expansion, stating, "As we mark the 70th anniversary of the Eurovision Song Contest, it feels especially meaningful to open this next chapter with Asia, a region rich in culture, creativity and talent." This Asian version is set to follow the original European contest, which will be held in Vienna in May with 35 countries vying for the title. The participating Asian countries will soon host their respective national selection rounds, with the winners proceeding to the grand final in Bangkok.
The Eurovision Song Contest has a proven track record of attracting massive audiences, with the last year's event drawing over 160 million viewers worldwide. This is not the contest's first attempt at global expansion; in 2022, organizers launched the American Song Contest, featuring singers from all 50 states and hosted by Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dogg. However, that venture saw soft viewership and did not secure a second season, highlighting the challenges of replicating the European format's success.
Despite its stated aim to set aside politics and global conflict to focus on music, the contest has frequently faced political controversies. The upcoming Vienna edition, for example, is being boycotted by Slovenia, Iceland, Ireland, Spain, and the Netherlands due to the inclusion of Israel amid the ongoing war in Gaza. Similarly, last year's Eurovision experienced protests both inside and outside the venues regarding the participation of singer Yuval Raphael, a survivor of the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel. Furthermore, Russia has been barred from participating in the contest since 2022 following its war against Ukraine. The Asian expansion promises to uphold the contest's core values, ensuring that "every vote will count" and spotlighting the "celebration of original pop music."
