Nigerians Safety Guaranteed As Envoy Reassures Citizens Amidst Mideast Turmoil
The Iranian Ambassador to Nigeria, Gholamreza Mahdavi Raja, has assured Nigerians that citizens residing in Iran remain safe despite the ongoing escalation of tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, United States, and Israel.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the envoy confirmed that there have been no reported casualties or injuries involving Nigerians living in Iranian cities such as Tehran and Qom.
He noted that the Iranian government remains committed to ensuring the safety of all foreign residents, including Nigerians.
Ambassador Raja highlighted the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Iran and Nigeria, which has spanned more than 55 years.
According to him, the strong bilateral ties between the two countries continue to safeguard the well-being of Nigerians living in the Islamic Republic.
He also noted that both nations maintain active cooperation across key sectors such as politics, agriculture, energy, education, and industry, reinforcing a partnership built on mutual respect and strategic collaboration.
Addressing the rising regional tensions, the envoy stated that Iran has accused the United States and Israel of carrying out deliberate military aggression on its territory.
He described the alleged actions as violations of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, insisting that Iran retains the legitimate right to defend its sovereignty and population.
He added that Iran’s military responses have been strictly defensive, targeting only military installations in line with Article 51 of the UN Charter on self-defense, and do not threaten civilians or foreign nationals, including Nigerians.
The ambassador also noted that the period of heightened tensions coincided with major cultural and religious observances in Iran, including Ramadan and the Iranian New Year, Nowruz.
Despite the situation, he said the safety and well-being of foreign residents have remained unaffected and urged Nigerians in Iran to remain calm and follow official guidance.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government said it is closely monitoring the developments and has issued travel advisories for citizens in Iran and neighboring Gulf countries.
While the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission continues coordinating with authorities to provide information and support to Nigerians in the region.
