Emotional Exit: Super Eagles Legend Troost-Ekong Bares His Soul on Retirement Regret
)
Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has officially announced his retirement from international football, just weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The 32-year-old defender concludes a remarkable journey with Nigeria, a career he described as "the greatest privilege of my life." Despite finding peace in his decision to step away, Troost-Ekong admitted to one enduring personal disappointment: never lifting the Africa Cup of Nations trophy or playing in another World Cup with Nigeria.
In his announcement, shared via social media, Troost-Ekong penned an emotional message: "HONOURED. GRATEFUL. FOREVER A SUPER EAGLE. Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will. Here’s to the next chapter." This statement encapsulated his deep connection and commitment to the national team, even as he embarked on a new phase of his career.
Reflecting on his journey, the Dutch-born defender confessed that his achievements with Nigeria had surpassed anything he could have imagined as a young boy. He told Standard Sport, "I would dream big, bigger than other people believed in me or thought was possible. To go in this direction with Nigeria… I would not have been able to write it down. I’ve lived beyond my wildest dreams." This sentiment highlights the profound impact his international career had on his life and aspirations.
Troost-Ekong's last full match for Nigeria was in October against Lesotho, where he notably scored in a 2-1 victory. However, with the emergence of new defensive talents, such as Benjamin Frederick, his role within the Super Eagles squad had begun to diminish. His retirement marks the end of an era for a player who captained Nigeria on some of African football's biggest stages, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and pride.
