Emirates NBD Revolutionizes Travel with AI Assistant Powered by Visa & Tripadvisor

Emirates NBD, in collaboration with Visa and Tripadvisor, has introduced what it claims to be the UAE’s first bank-led AI Travel Assistant. This innovative conversational tool is designed to simplify travel planning for users by allowing them to describe their preferences, budget, and travel style in natural language. It then generates tailored itineraries, destination suggestions, and local recommendations.

The AI Travel Assistant leverages Tripadvisor's extensive database, which includes over one billion reviews and eight million listings. This robust data enables enhanced customization, particularly for the 15 most popular destinations among UAE travelers. A key feature of the platform is its dynamic integration of relevant Visa cardholder benefits, such as hotel discounts and car rental offers, which surface within the user's conversation.

Accessibility is a cornerstone of this new offering; the tool is available free of charge via the Emirates NBD website and a dedicated Tripadvisor domain. Notably, it does not require a bank account or login to use the basic features, aligning with Emirates NBD's strategic shift towards ecosystem-led digital banking. Rohit Garg, group head of retail products and chief digital officer of retail banking and wealth management at Emirates NBD, emphasized that this initiative combines cutting-edge AI with world-class insights to empower travelers with innovative and personalized digital experiences.

From a strategic perspective, Emirates NBD frames this product as a lifestyle extension rather than a traditional transactional banking feature. This approach reflects a broader trend among Gulf and South-East Asian retail banks, where non-financial engagement is increasingly crucial for securing primary customer relationships. Internal data from Emirates NBD indicates that the average UAE resident plans seven trips annually and can spend up to three months researching a single trip, highlighting the demand for streamlined travel planning solutions.

The open-access design, which allows even non-Emirates NBD account holders or non-Visa cardholders to utilize the basic tool, is commercially significant. While it broadens the customer acquisition funnel, it also means the core travel content is freely available, potentially limiting exclusivity. The true measure of its commercial viability will be how Emirates NBD tracks conversion from travel planning activities to card spend or new account openings.

The market for AI-assisted travel planning has seen considerable activity over the past 18 months, with other major retail banks and card networks like Mastercard and American Express deploying similar features globally. Therefore, Emirates NBD's
