The Kizimkazi Festival, a significant cultural event, is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at the Mchangamle coastal area in Kizimkazi, located in southern Unguja, Zanzibar. This year's festival is poised to be a major attraction, expected to draw both local residents and visitors from across Zanzibar and other parts of Tanzania, with invitations also extended to attendees from abroad.

A primary highlight of the festival will be the traditional dhow races, for which at least 20 boats have already registered. Hamid Abdulhamid Khamis, the secretary of the festival organising committee, underscored the profound importance of these races. He articulated that the dhow races are more than just entertainment; they are an intrinsic part of Zanzibar's cultural and maritime heritage. The core objective is to diligently preserve traditional sporting activities and to actively revive and safeguard traditional sports that are currently at risk of disappearing. The competition itself will unite teams from the local communities of Kizimkazi Dimbani and Kizimkazi Mikunguni, emphasizing the deep community involvement central to the event.

The festival is designed to actively engage local communities and forms part of a broader strategic effort to encourage young people to participate in traditional activities. This engagement aims to foster and sustain a strong interest in Zanzibar's rich seafaring culture. In addition to the dhow races, the festival programme will commence with a half-marathon in the early morning, an event generously sponsored by the Mwanamke Initiatives Foundation. This sporting activity will precede the official opening of the festival, which is anticipated to be attended by high-profile dignitaries. The President of Zanzibar is expected to participate in the half-marathon and subsequently officially inaugurate the festival. Furthermore, Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba is also slated to attend, highlighting the national significance and recognition of the event.

The organising committee envisions the festival as a multifaceted platform, meticulously crafted to seamlessly integrate traditional sport and cultural activities with the promotion of tourism. According to Khamis, the event is set to generate substantial opportunities for local businesses, providing a discernible economic boost to the region. Simultaneously, it will serve as an effective means to promote Kizimkazi as an attractive and distinctive destination for visitors, showcasing its unique cultural offerings and inherent natural beauty.
