Dream Casting Alert: Gary Oldman Eyed for Apple TV Hit Series

Season 3 of Apple TV+’s Shrinking leans heavily into the theme of “moving forward,” following its ensemble cast as they step into pivotal new phases of life. Co-creator and lead actor Jason Segel has suggested that while the show was initially envisioned as a three-season story, he remains open to continuing it—provided the narrative genuinely calls for more and the creative team finds a meaningful new direction. For now, Season 3 is designed as a moment of transition rather than finality.

At the heart of the season is Jimmy’s emotional reckoning with his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell) preparing to leave for college, forcing him to reassert his role as a parent after earlier seasons blurred those boundaries. Paul (Harrison Ford) confronts life with Parkinson’s disease, choosing to prioritize time with family and loved ones, while Brian (Michael Urie) and Charlie (Devin Kawaoka) adjust to the realities of new parenthood. Jimmy also considers pursuing the growing romantic spark between himself and Sofi (Cobie Smulders), reinforcing the show’s focus on personal growth and acceptance of change.

Segel revealed that Alice’s college fears run deeper than simple separation anxiety, culminating in a standout speech that exposes her underlying emotional struggles. He also shared lighter behind-the-scenes moments, including the awkwardness of filming soccer scenes without an actual game and his unscripted, overjoyed reaction to Jimmy being asked to officiate Paul and Julie’s wedding—an instinctive moment that ultimately made the final cut. The episode’s memorable “cantaloupe joke,” originally conceived a year earlier for a different wedding storyline, was repurposed with Bill Lawrence challenging himself to deliver it in one long, unbroken sentence.

Beyond Shrinking, Segel reflected on the films that shaped him creatively. He praised Christopher Nolan’sInception and Batman Begins, expressed enduring love for Spielberg’s E.T., and called Back to the Future a “perfect movie” that influences his writing structure. He also cited Doc Hollywood as a direct inspiration for Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Looking ahead, Segel joked about a genre-bending vampire crossover entering Jimmy’s therapy office and named Gary Oldman—perhaps as Dracula or a Slow Horses character—as a dream collaborator.
