Dragon Tattoo Rebirth: Oyelowo & Prettejohn Cast in Sky Series!

Sky's highly anticipated television reimagining of Steig Larsson's acclaimed Millennium book series, titled “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” has officially announced its lead actors. David Oyelowo, known for his roles in “Silo” and “Selma,” will step into the shoes of disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist, while Viola Prettejohn, who has appeared in “The Crown” and “The Testament of Ann Lee,” is set to portray the uncompromising hacker Lisbeth Salander. This new adaptation follows David Fincher’s 2011 film of the same name, which starred Daniel Craig as Blomkvist and Rooney Mara as Salander.

The eight-part mystery thriller, produced by Left Bank Pictures—the company behind hits like “The Crown” and “Dept Q”—aims to transport the iconic narrative “into the present day.” The series will delve into contemporary issues, exploring how “power, secrecy and misogyny take on new and insidious forms in an ever more connected digital world.” Oscar-nominated director Reinaldo Marcus Green, acclaimed for “King Richard,” has joined the project as the lead director and an executive producer. Production is slated to commence in Lithuania next month.

According to the show’s synopsis, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” will follow Mikael Blomkvist, a “canceled star journalist,” and Lisbeth Salander as they embark on an investigation into the long-standing disappearance of Harriet Vanger. Vanger vanished over three decades ago from the secluded island estate of one of Sweden’s most influential industrial dynasties. As their inquiry deepens into the Vanger family’s hidden past, the duo finds themselves drawn perilously close to a chilling threat that is unfolding dangerously in their present.

The creative team behind the series is robust. In addition to Reinaldo Marcus Green, the writing and executive producing duties are handled by Amanda Coe (“Apple Tree Yard,” “The Trial of Christine Keeler”), Steve Lightfoot (“Behind Her Eyes,” “The Punisher”), and Angela LaManna (“The Haunting of Bly Manor,” “Behind Her Eyes”). Further directorial contributions will come from Andrea Harkin (“The Trial of Christine Keeler,” “Time”) and Amy Neil (“Hanna,” “Hostage”). Executive producers include David Oyelowo himself, Charlotte Moore and John Phillips for Left Bank Pictures, Sam Hoyle for Sky, and Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal. Nuala O’Leary serves as the series producer.

Meghan Lyvers, managing director of scripted originals at Sky, expressed enthusiasm for the new casting, stating, “Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist are two of modern fiction’s most iconic and compelling characters, and we’re thrilled to have Viola and David bringing them to life for a new generation.” She added that the team is creating a series that honors the original while taking its themes “into a world that feels unmistakably of the moment.” Charlotte Moore of Left Bank Pictures echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the timeless themes of “power, corruption, justice and violence against women,” which she believes are even more relevant today.

The series will be broadcast on Sky platforms across the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Sony Pictures Television is responsible for international distribution and plans to introduce the series to global clients at Mipcom in October. The initial news of the series commission was reported by Variety in January, and Deadline Hollywood was the first to report the casting news.
