Donald Trump to Host Kennedy Center Honors, Featuring Music Icons Gloria Gaynor and KISS!

The 2025 Kennedy Center Honors took an unprecedented turn when President Donald Trump stepped out of the traditional presidential viewing box to host the ceremony himself. Held on December 7 at the Kennedy Center, the event celebrated cultural heavyweights including Sylvester Stallone, George Strait, Gloria Gaynor, and the rock group KISS.
Since returning to office in January, Trump has placed the Kennedy Center at the center of his critique of what he describes as “woke” cultural institutions. His decision to host the program—which will air December 23 on CBS and stream via Paramount+—followed years of absence from the event during his earlier term. Trump said he accepted the hosting role “at the request of a certain television network,” predicting record viewership.
Trump’s involvement positioned him in a role previously filled by figures such as Walter Cronkite and Stephen Colbert, marking a significant shift in tradition. Beyond the ceremony, the president has reshaped the institution, appointing political allies to its board and overseeing a major renovation supported by congressional funding. His imprint on the venue comes after years of publicly critiquing its programming, even joking about renaming it the “Trump Kennedy Center.” The center remains a symbol of American artistic heritage under the oversight of the National Endowment for the Arts.
Founded in 1978, the honors recognize artists whose cultural contributions have shaped American identity. This year’s lineup includes Stallone for his enduring Rocky and Rambo legacies, Gaynor for her timeless anthem “I Will Survive,” and KISS for their electrifying performances and global following. The night carried emotional weight for KISS, whose founding guitarist Ace Frehley died in October; Gene Simmons said Trump personally requested an empty chair be placed on stage in Frehley’s honor. Michael Crawford, another honoree, described the tribute as “a beautiful honor at the close of a long career.”
For decades, the honors have brought presidents and artists together across ideological divides. Ronald Reagan once applauded liberal playwright Arthur Miller, and Bill Clinton recognized conservative actor Charlton Heston. But during Trump’s first term, several honorees—such as Norman Lear—openly criticized him, prompting Trump to avoid the ceremonies entirely. His return this year reflected a renewed and far more assertive presence.
Trump said he played a direct role in selecting the 2025 honorees, rejecting some suggestions he called “too woke.” Stallone has been one of Trump’s most outspoken celebrity supporters, while Gloria Gaynor has donated to Republican causes. KISS co-founder Gene Simmons once praised Trump but later condemned his rhetoric in 2022. Paul Stanley, another band member, criticized Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election but recently called for unity among Americans. The ceremony ultimately combined artistic celebration with political undertones—an intersection that made this year’s honors unlike any before.
