Dogecoin's Epic 12-Year Saga: Founder Spills Origins!

Dogecoin, the pioneering dog-themed cryptocurrency, recently marked its 12th anniversary, having originally launched on December 6, 2013. This milestone was celebrated by its co-founder, Billy Markus, on December 6, 2025. Conceived by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, Dogecoin holds the distinction of being both the first "meme coin" and, more specifically, the first "dog coin." Its iconic representation, the Shiba Inu, is a Japanese dog breed that gained widespread popularity as an online meme.
On this significant occasion, Dogecoin co-founder Billy Markus, who goes by the alias Shibetoshi Nakamoto on X, shared a witty tweet commemorating the anniversary. Playfully recalling its beginnings, Markus wrote, "12 years ago i made something stupid and then a bunch of even stupider stuff happened and now i am posting about it on the internet to 2.15 million followers, happy 12th genesis day, Dogecoin." He later corrected himself in another tweet, noting his follower count had surpassed 2.26 million, expressing apologies to the initially "missed" 110,000 followers.
What began as a joke has remarkably evolved into a significant player in the cryptocurrency space. Dogecoin currently ranks as the ninth largest cryptocurrency globally, boasting a market capitalization of $22.56 billion and trading at $0.1396 at press time.
The genesis of Dogecoin traces back to Jackson Palmer, then a member of the Adobe marketing department in Sydney, Australia. Palmer acquired the domain Dogecoin.com and created a splash screen featuring the coin's logo and scattered Comic Sans text. Upon discovering the site, Billy Markus contacted Palmer, initiating their collaborative efforts to develop the cryptocurrency. Markus meticulously designed Dogecoin's protocol, drawing inspiration from existing cryptocurrencies Luckycoin and Litecoin, both of which utilize scrypt technology within their proof-of-work algorithm.
The beloved Japanese Shiba Inu, Kabosu, is the true face behind the "doge" meme and subsequently, the Dogecoin cryptocurrency. Her journey to internet fame began in 2010 when Sato, a teacher from Sakura, east of Tokyo, adopted Kabosu from a puppy mill where she would otherwise have been put down. Two years later, Sato captured a now-famous picture of her pet crossing her paws on the sofa. This image, along with variations featuring overlaid Comic Sans text, was popularized through a Tumblr blog titled "Shiba Confessions." Kabosu, the Shiba Inu that inspired a generation of online humor, sadly passed away in May 2024, after 14 years of unparalleled internet fame.
