DEL TORO DECLARES WAR: 'No Goddamn AI' in 'Pan's Labyrinth' Re-Release, Protecting Art's Soul!

Guillermo del Toro's critically acclaimed masterpiece, "Pan's Labyrinth," is set to return to theaters for its 20th anniversary, bringing a unique and meticulously crafted re-release experience to audiences. The filmmaker revealed details of the special engagement at San Diego Comic-Con, emphasizing a steadfast rule during the conversion process: "No goddamn AI."

Del Toro made it clear that the film's conversion into 3D was an entirely manual effort, deliberately eschewing artificial intelligence. He articulated his reasoning, stating, "What we’re protecting is the beauty and the redeeming power of art. It’s not about who gets the job. We are protecting a lineage of art. If we cut a generation of people from learning their craft, you’re cutting the rest of the history of that medium away from them for what?" This commitment to human artistry meant choosing the "good" and time-intensive option over a quick, AI-driven process, ensuring every element of depth was decided by human judgment.

The re-release will hit theaters on October 9, marking the first time "Pan's Labyrinth" will be available in 3D and HDR formats. In addition to the immersive 3D HDR version, a 2D HDR option will also be offered. Cineverse and Fathom 4K are responsible for bringing these meticulously overseen versions to the big screen, with del Toro himself personally supervising each iteration. Tickets for these special screenings will become available for purchase starting September 9.

During the Comic-Con panel, del Toro also teased an upcoming documentary that delves into the intricate process of creating the original "Pan's Labyrinth." This documentary is set to feature insightful appearances and commentary from renowned actors such as Jacob Elordi, Cate Blanchett, and Charlie Day, promising a deeper look into the film's genesis.

Originally released in 2006, "Pan's Labyrinth" tells the haunting story of a young girl named Ofelia, portrayed by Ivana Baquero, who escapes the harsh realities of 1944 Francoist Spain in the wake of the Spanish Civil War by journeying into a fantastical realm. Within this magical yet dangerous world, she encounters a mysterious faun and navigates a landscape populated by deadly beasts. The film also stars Doug Jones, Maribel Verdú, and Sergi López in pivotal roles.

The original film achieved significant critical and commercial success, grossing $83 million worldwide. It garnered six Academy Award nominations, ultimately winning three Oscars for Best Makeup, Cinematography, and Art Direction, solidifying its place as a cinematic landmark. Its enduring legacy was recently underscored at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where del Toro presented a 4K restoration of the film, which was met with several minutes of enthusiastic applause. Notably, the original premiere of "Pan's Labyrinth" at Cannes two decades ago made history by receiving an astonishing 22-minute standing ovation, a testament to its profound impact.
