US Denounces Horrific Killings of Plateau Cleric's Family

The United States has issued a strong condemnation following the horrific killing of nine members of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo’s extended family, including a two-month-old baby, during an overnight attack on July 12 in the Kum community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria. In a statement released on Friday, the US expressed profound sympathy to the bereaved families and all others affected by this tragic event, while simultaneously raising serious concerns over the persistent and alarming violence targeting Christian communities and other vulnerable groups across Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.

Highlighting the escalating security crisis, the US revealed that it had recently engaged in discussions with Nigerian officials regarding the worsening situation. During these discussions, the US underscored the urgent necessity for the Nigerian authorities to implement stronger, more effective measures to prevent further attacks and ensure the comprehensive protection of Christians and other vulnerable communities. The statement explicitly called for the perpetrators of these violent acts to be held accountable, emphasizing that immediate and decisive action is required to bolster security protocols.

Furthermore, the United States reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to collaborate with the Nigerian government and international partners. Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, who serves as the Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations for Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, disclosed that his family has been repeatedly targeted due to his outspoken campaign against what he describes as genocide in the state. He tragically recounted previous attacks, including the killings of his grandmother and an uncle by extremists. Disturbingly, shortly after burying his nine relatives from the July 12 attack, Dachomo received a written threat from the same militia, explicitly warning that he would be their next target, further illustrating the grave danger faced by those advocating for peace and justice in the region.
