Daniel Day-Lewis' Shocking Comeback Flops Hard: One of 2025's Worst Box Office Debuts!
The cinematic landscape is currently presenting a tale of contrasting fortunes for two highly anticipated films, each with significant ties to celebrated talents. While director Paul Thomas Anderson is enjoying the relative success of his latest project, "One Battle After Another," which has emerged as the highest-grossing film of his illustrious career, his frequent collaborator, the legendary actor Daniel Day-Lewis, faces a potential box office disappointment with "Anemone," a film that marks his return from retirement.
"Anemone" holds particular significance as it is Daniel Day-Lewis's first film since the acclaimed "Phantom Thread," directed by Anderson and released in 2017. Following "Phantom Thread," Day-Lewis had announced his retirement from acting, a stance he had maintained until his son, Ronan Day-Lewis, successfully convinced him to return for his debut feature film. Ronan Day-Lewis not only directed "Anemone" but also co-wrote the psychological horror film with his father. The film, which centers on complex familial relationships, exploring the bonds between fathers, sons, and brothers, boasts a runtime of 97 minutes and was released on October 10, 2025. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as Ray Stoker, alongside Sean Bean as Jem Stoker.
Despite the immense publicity surrounding Daniel Day-Lewis's comeback, "Anemone" opened to mixed reviews and a soft box office performance in its limited release this past weekend. While Day-Lewis is not traditionally known for delivering massive opening weekends, the circumstances of his return made the film a notable event. Domestically, "Anemone" grossed under $700,000 in its first three days across approximately 865 locations—a distribution strategy that doesn't quite fit either a limited or wide release. Its performance saw it finish below several low-grossing titles and even re-releases such as "Avatar: The Way of Water," "Perfect Blue," and "Casper."
Critics, while predictably applauding Day-Lewis's performance, were less enthusiastic about the film itself. It currently holds a 56% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus noting that "Anemone succeeds more as a showcase for its star's evergreen magnetism and debut director Ronan Day-Lewis' stylistic flair than as a cohesive drama," highlighting the film's strengths in individual performances and direction over its overall narrative coherence.
In stark contrast, "One Battle After Another," an action-adventure film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has passed the coveted $100 million mark at the worldwide box office this weekend. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film's financial journey is still unfolding, as its reported budget of around $140 million means it has a considerable way to go to be definitively deemed a financial success. However, its positive critical reviews, strong audience reception, and a relatively soft second-weekend drop bode well for its future. "One Battle After Another" has also cemented its position as a front-runner for the Best Picture honor at the Oscars, solidifying its standing as a major contender this awards season. The film is currently available to watch in theaters.
