Cyber-Espionage Alarm: Chinese Gang Raids UK Foreign Office, Ministers Scramble to Contain Fallout

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) was subjected to a cyber-attack in October, a fact confirmed by minister Chris Bryant. Bryant, serving as both a trade minister in Keir Starmer’s government and a business minister, addressed the breach publicly, noting that government servers had been compromised. Details of the incident were brought to light by a report in The Sun, which implicated a Chinese hacker group known as Storm 1849 as the perpetrators and suggested that potentially tens of thousands of visa details could have been affected.
