Crisis of Confidence: By-Elections Put Poll Agency Credibility to the Ultimate Test Amidst Bribery Claims

The nation is poised for a significant electoral exercise, as a record 24 by-elections are scheduled to take place. These mini polls represent a critical litmus test for the newly reconstituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), with their conduct expected to either inspire or erode the confidence of Kenyans in the electoral agency.
Across various regions, election officials have been diligently preparing for the upcoming polls. In Malava, an IEBC official was observed inspecting election materials at Malava Boys high school on November 25, 2025, in readiness for the Malava parliamentary seat by-election slated for Thursday, November 27, 2025. Concurrently, in Ugunja, Siaya, election officials were seen performing final checks of election materials at Ambira Boys High school before their dispatch to the numerous polling stations.
These by-elections, which were notably delayed by a lack of commissioners at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, arrive at a time of heightened political activity. The stage is set for a series of high-stakes political duels, whose aftermath is anticipated to reverberate well into the looming 2027 General Elections. Senior politicians have been actively engaged, falling over themselves to please the electorate, understanding that these mini polls will cast a significant shadow and provide crucial insights into the political landscape leading up to the next national election.
