Chris Pratt's Low-Rated Franchise Stuns With Streaming Surge After Prequel's Triumph

Chris Pratt, once a prominent figure headlining multiple theatrical franchises simultaneously, has successfully transitioned into a new era of his career, one significantly expanded by streaming platforms. Beyond his current voice roles as lead characters in both The Super Mario Bros. and the Garfield animated franchises, Pratt is a central figure on Prime Video, notably headlining the action-thriller series, The Terminal List, which has recently spawned a prequel spin-off titled The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.
Both The Terminal List and its new spin-off have demonstrated considerable success on Prime Video. Recent data from FlixPatrol indicated a significant surge in viewership for both shows, coinciding with the finale of Dark Wolf. On October 1, Dark Wolf secured the position of the second-most-watched show globally on Prime Video, with The Terminal List following closely at ninth place, surpassing Confidence Queen. This strong performance highlights the continued demand for the franchise.
The original series, The Terminal List, which premiered in 2022, features Pratt as a CIA operative whose team members become targets of a mysterious enemy. The series is based on the novel by Jack Carr. Dark Wolf serves as a prequel, with Taylor Kitsch taking on the lead protagonist role, while Pratt appears in a supporting capacity. Despite facing lukewarm critical reception upon its initial release, earning a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes with critics noting its "unrelenting gruffness," The Terminal List has consistently proven its popularity with audiences on Prime Video. In contrast, Dark Wolf received a more favorable critical response, achieving a superior 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The success of the original series led to a green light for its second season in 2023.
The success of The Terminal List franchise also aligns with Prime Video's broader strategy of cultivating what has been dubbed "dad content." Over the past few years, the platform has solidified its position as a leading destination for this genre, featuring popular titles such as Bosch, Jack Ryan, and Reacher. Additionally, Prime Video has hosted a variety of films tailored to this demographic, including Without Remorse, The Accountant 2, A Working Man, and the recent Liam Neeson action sequel, Ice Road: Vengeance. This strategic focus positions Prime Video in direct competition with platforms like Paramount+, which heavily relies on the blockbuster shows of Taylor Sheridan.
Both The Terminal List and its compelling spin-off, Dark Wolf, are available for streaming on Prime Video, further cementing Chris Pratt's evolved presence in the entertainment landscape and Prime Video's established niche in popular genre content.
