Chinese AI Powerhouse Moonshot Secures Staggering $2B Funding, Valued at $20B!

Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) companies are capturing significant investor interest, particularly in their open-source models, despite potentially having less upfront capital compared to their Western counterparts. This trend highlights a growing demand for cost-effective inference solutions. A prime example is Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based AI laboratory renowned for its Kimi series of open-weight large language models (LLMs), which has recently completed a substantial fundraising round.
Moonshot AI has successfully raised approximately $2 billion, pushing its valuation to an impressive $20 billion. This latest capital injection was spearheaded by Long-Z Investment, the venture capital arm of Chinese food delivery giant Meituan, with additional participation from notable investors including Tsinghua Capital, China Mobile, and CPE Yuanfeng. According to Huafeng Capital, an advisor to some investors in the round, Moonshot AI has accumulated a total of $3.9 billion in funding over the past six months alone. The company's valuation has seen a dramatic increase, growing from $4.3 billion at the end of 2025 to over $10 billion by early 2026, following a $700 million raise. Moonshot's existing backers include major industry names like Alibaba, Tencent, HongShan (formerly Sequoia China), ZhenFund, IDG Capital, and 5Y Capital.
Founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a distinguished former researcher from Meta AI and Google Brain, Moonshot AI rapidly ascended to become one of China's leading AI laboratories. Its breakthrough came with the open-weight Kimi K2.5 LLM, which garnered widespread acclaim in the coding community earlier this year. This model demonstrated performance metrics closely rivaling those of industry leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic at the time. Currently, Moonshot AI's latest iteration, Kimi K2.6, holds the position of the second-most utilized LLM on the prominent distribution platform OpenRouter.
The surging investor confidence in Chinese open-weight AI models is further underscored by Moonshot AI's financial performance, with its annual recurring revenue exceeding $200 million in April. This growth is primarily attributed to a rapid expansion in paid subscriptions and API usage. The broader market also reflects this enthusiasm, with other Chinese AI powerhouses attracting considerable attention. DeepSeek, widely regarded as one of China's most popular AI labs, is reportedly in discussions to secure its first external capital, potentially at a valuation of around $45 billion.
Some of Moonshot AI's rivals have even successfully entered public markets, leveraging the strong demand for their AI innovations. Zhipu AI, trading as Knowledge Atlas Technology in Hong Kong, closed recently with a market capitalization of HK$434.7 billion (approximately $55.9 billion). Similarly, MiniMax ended the day with a market cap of HK$257.3 billion (approximately $33 billion), both having experienced significant rallies following the release of new models. Moonshot AI's Kimi models are positioned in a competitive landscape, directly challenging established players such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude, as well as domestic competitors like ByteDance’s Doubao, Alibaba’s Qwen, Zhipu’s Z.ai, and DeepSeek.
