Oyo School Kidnappers Hold Teachers, Pupils Hostage As Security Beef-Up Ordered & Leaders Blasted
The recent mass abduction of students, teachers, and a school principal from three different schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has triggered widespread condemnation and intensified calls for urgent government action.
The incident, which occurred last Friday, involved attacks on LA Primary School, Community Grammar School in Ahoro-Esiele Community, and Community High School, Esiele. Tragically, a teacher was killed during the assault, and multiple pupils, students, and staff members were forcefully taken into captivity by armed gunmen.
Among the abducted are Mrs. Racheal Alamu, the Principal of Community High School, Esiele, and a nursing mother who identified herself as a staff member of First Baptist Church in Ogbomoso, Yawota area.
Disturbing videos have emerged from captivity, showing these victims tearfully appealing for intervention.
In one video, the nursing mother pleaded with the Federal Government, Oyo State Government, her church, and the community to negotiate their release, describing the harsh conditions of their confinement.
Similarly, Mrs. Alamu appealed to federal and state authorities, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and all Nigerians for help to prevent further loss of lives, stating that they had been held since Friday and feared for their safety and that of the children.
The Yoruba socio-cultural group, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, vehemently condemned the abductions, describing them as a “grave failure of government at all levels.”
In a statement signed by Convener Olusola Badero and released by Princess Balogun, the group squarely blamed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for failing in their primary duty to secure the lives and property of Yoruba people.
The group alleged that terrorists were increasingly taking control of parts of the Southwest, threatening its historically peaceful environment, and accused political leaders of prioritizing the 2027 presidential election over the safety of citizens.
Furthermore, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá expressed frustration over ignored warnings to authorities about escalating insecurity, citing previous incidents in Kwara South.
They demanded the immediate release of all victims from Oriire, as well as those abducted in Kwara and Ondo States, urging security agencies to intensify operations and prosecute perpetrators to prevent further destabilization of the region.
In response to the crisis, the Oyo State Government, through its Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, confirmed that security agencies had launched coordinated rescue operations.
Operatives from the Nigerian Army, police, Amotekun Corps, Civil Defence Agro Rangers, and local hunters were mobilized to seal off escape routes around the National Park axis, effectively confining the suspected kidnappers within the area.
Patrol teams were deployed through Igbeti towards Oloka and surrounding communities. However, authorities have yet to establish direct contact with the abductors, and efforts are ongoing to determine the exact number of pupils abducted, as school authorities have not provided accurate records.
The incident has also prompted a proactive response from the neighboring Osun State Government. Governor Ademola Adeleke ordered the immediate revitalization of the state’s Safe School Initiative to prevent any spread of school attacks and kidnappings.
The governor directed the Ministry of Education and other relevant security agencies to urgently reactivate and strengthen existing school protection structures, particularly in rural and border communities.
He emphasized the need for intensified intelligence gathering around these vulnerable schools and instructed the Osun Amotekun Corps to strengthen collaboration with non-governmental organizations providing security support.
Governor Adeleke reaffirmed his commitment to securing pupils across the state’s school system, assuring parents and school authorities of their safety and protection.
This spate of abductions underscores the increasing vulnerability of schools in parts of Nigeria, renewing national concerns despite repeated governmental promises to bolster security around educational institutions.
The psychological and emotional toll on the abducted children and their families is expected to be profound and long-lasting, highlighting the urgent need for decisive and effective measures to restore peace and security in the affected regions.
