Chelsea's Rosenior Era Begins with Fulham Defeat, Stamford Bridge Roar Demanded

Liam Rosenior has stepped into a tumultuous environment at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea's newly appointed head coach, inheriting a team plagued by dysfunction and a wave of discontent from supporters. His six-year contract, signed just prior to Chelsea's 2-1 defeat against West London rivals Fulham, sees him take the reins of a squad rich in young talent but lacking experience, a reliable goalkeeper, and consistent full-backs. Perhaps more pressing is the palpable anger directed at co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, with fans vocalizing their frustration through expletive-laced chants and even invoking the name of former owner Roman Abramovich.
Rosenior's appointment follows the dismissal of Enzo Maresca, who, despite guiding Chelsea to a UEFA Conference League title, a FIFA Club World Cup, and Champions League qualification, had voiced frustrations echoing those of the fanbase. His swift replacement by Rosenior, rather than a more established 'elite' coach, has further inflamed tensions among the supporters, who met the new head coach with indifference rather than enthusiasm.
The scale of the challenge became immediately apparent during the Fulham game. Having signed his contract on Tuesday, Rosenior opted to sit in the directors' box alongside co-owner Eghbali, allowing interim coach Calum McFarlane to oversee the match. This decision, described by some as a potential 'second mistake' after taking the job itself, meant he was an observer as Chelsea succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at Craven Cottage. The match saw Chelsea's Marc Cucurella sent off in the first half for a DOGSO (denial of an obvious goal scoring opportunity) foul on Harry Wilson, a decision confirmed by VAR. Fulham's Raúl Jiménez opened the scoring in the second half, followed by a Liam Delap equalizer for ten-man Chelsea, before Harry Wilson secured the winning goal for Fulham. This defeat pushed Chelsea down to eighth in the Premier League, outside the top five for the first time since August, and marked their fifth consecutive league game without a win, failing to secure a victory since the start of the new year.
On the pitch, Rosenior faces a squad with undeniable talent but a glaring lack of direction and discipline. Cucurella's red card was Chelsea's seventh across all competitions this season, significantly more than any other Premier League side. Rosenior's immediate task is to instill structure and order, though questions remain about achieving this without a commanding center-back to organize his unreliable defense. Despite being overstocked with attacking players, the team's offense is not currently firing, contributing to their poor form and jeopardizing their minimum aim of Champions League qualification.
Despite the storm, Rosenior has set ambitious goals for his tenure. He officially began his role on January 6, 2026, signing a deal until 2032, and has articulated a clear, winning-focused vision. Speaking upon his arrival, the former Hull City and Strasbourg coach emphasized that his target is not merely to join Chelsea but to restore its winning legacy.
