Raheem Sterling has officially departed Chelsea Football Club by mutual agreement, bringing an end to his three-and-a-half-season tenure at Stamford Bridge. The 31-year-old forward, who had 18 months remaining on his lucrative £325,000-a-week contract, reached an agreement with the club on Wednesday for an early termination.

Sterling's move to Chelsea in the summer of 2022 from Manchester City for £47.5 million ($64m) marked the first major men's signing of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital era. He was initially expected to be a cornerstone of the club's new direction, arriving as a proven Premier League winner. However, his time in west London coincided with a turbulent period for Chelsea, both on and off the pitch, and his performance often fell short of expectations.

During his spell at Chelsea, Sterling made a total of 81 appearances across all competitions, scoring 19 goals. In the Premier League, he featured 59 times, starting 45 matches and scoring 14 goals. Despite these numbers, he struggled to consistently impose himself and often appeared a shadow of the explosive winger seen at his previous clubs.

The England international last played a competitive match for the Blues in May 2024. Having been deemed surplus to requirements under former manager Enzo Maresca and subsequently under new head coach Liam Rosenior, Sterling spent the last season on loan at Arsenal. This loan spell was intended to revive his career, but it also proved disappointing, with Sterling making only 17 Premier League appearances for the Gunners, 10 of which were from the bench, and failing to score a single league goal in north London.

Upon his return to Chelsea, Sterling found himself frozen out, training separately from the first-team squad at Cobham with a group of players sometimes referred to as the 'bomb squad'. He had not featured for Chelsea again, having not played a competitive match in eight months since Arsenal's final game of the 2024-25 season. Chelsea were keen to offload his substantial salary from their wage bill, and attempts to find him a suitable exit had been made in previous transfer windows.

Sources indicated that Sterling desired a permanent deal for stability to revive his career, preferring not to move his children from their current schooling for a temporary loan. Following talks this week, it became clear there was no prospect of a change in his circumstances under Liam Rosenior, leading all parties to conclude that a mutual split was the best path forward. The settlement reached will save Chelsea over £20 million, as it is less than the amount he would have been paid had he stayed for the full remaining duration of his contract.

As a free agent, Sterling is now able to negotiate directly with clubs. While his preference is to remain in London, he is open to considering offers from both domestic and international clubs. West Ham, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Juventus, and Bayer Leverkusen had previously shown interest. Sterling remains an attractive proposition, boasting 82 international caps, 13 major trophies, and an MBE awarded in 2021, in addition to being a prominent voice in anti-discrimination campaigns.

This marks the end of a deeply troubled and ultimately disappointing chapter in Sterling's career, as he now seeks a fresh start to rebuild and potentially force his way back into England's plans for the 2026 World Cup.
