Chaos on Tracks: Drunken Abandoned BMW Sparks Travel Mayhem

A BMW 3 Series caused major disruption to Metrolink tram services in Greater Manchester on January 18 after being abandoned on the tracks. The incident forced a two-hour suspension of services on the Ashton line between Tameside and Manchester Piccadilly, leaving twelve tram stops across Tameside and east Manchester out of operation.

The vehicle came to a halt on the tram tracks between New Islington tram stop and the tunnel leading to Manchester Piccadilly. Witnesses reported seeing three individuals abandon the car, walking away along the tracks toward New Islington. Several onlookers also noted a strong smell of alcohol coming from inside the BMW.

Councillor Alan Good, representing Ancoats and Beswick, witnessed the car driving onto the tracks before it stalled. He commented:

"I was at my local tram stop in New Islington and a BMW just drove down the tram tracks. It obviously stopped because of the drop, might have busted a tyre. No way it's getting out without getting towed."

Recovery efforts were promptly undertaken by Transport for Greater Manchester (TFGM). By 12:30 pm, the vehicle was successfully removed, and tram services gradually resumed, though initial journeys experienced severe delays.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed their response to the incident. A spokesperson stated that the car appeared to have broken down on the tracks, leading to its abandonment. GMP officers are conducting keeper enquiries to identify and locate the vehicle’s owner. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made. Investigations continue to determine the driver and the full circumstances surrounding the abandoned BMW.
