Chaos at Gatwick! Bird Strike Grounds Air Peace London-Lagos Flight, Stranding Passengers

Nigerian airline, Air Peace Limited, experienced a significant disruption to its London (Gatwick) – Lagos service on Friday, May 1, 2026, following a bird strike incident. The collision between the aircraft and a bird occurred on the London to Lagos route, necessitating immediate operational adjustments and raising concerns among passengers.
In a statement titled "FLIGHT OPERATIONS UPDATE Flight Disruption On Our London - Lagos Operations Due To Bird Strike," signed by the airline’s spokesperson, Osifo-Whiskey Efe, Air Peace confirmed the incident. In line with established aviation safety protocols, the affected aircraft was immediately withdrawn from active service and grounded for a thorough technical assessment and comprehensive inspection by its engineering team based in the United Kingdom.
The incident, however, led to considerable inconvenience and distress for passengers. Prominent Nollywood actress Funke Akindele, who was among those affected, took to social media platform X to express her frustration and call out Air Peace. She described the situation as "unacceptable," stating that passengers, including elderly people, had been stranded since 6:30 AM at London Gatwick Airport without proper communication. Akindele highlighted that despite being promised hotel accommodation, many remained at baggage claim, hungry, exhausted, and without their bags. She urged the airline to release passengers' luggage and provide the promised hotel accommodation promptly, sharing a video to illustrate the plight of the stranded travelers.
Akindele's complaints were echoed by other passengers and added to a growing list of concerns about Air Peace’s international operations, particularly on the Lagos-London route, where delays and communication issues have been previously reported. Reality TV star Tacha also shared similar experiences of flight disruptions and poor passenger handling contributing to her missing an event.
In a follow-up statement, Air Peace clarified the circumstances, attributing the disruption to the bird strike, which is classified in aviation as a “force majeure” event. The airline insisted that safety considerations were paramount, explaining that the immediate grounding of the aircraft was essential for comprehensive safety inspections in line with global standards. Air Peace maintained that affected passengers were promptly informed of the development and the cancellation of the flight, with arrangements made for their welfare, including hotel accommodation at the Hilton London Gatwick and necessary transit coordination.
However, Air Peace acknowledged additional operational challenges, including airport congestion and delays by designated ground handling services, which affected baggage retrieval and the speed at which some passengers could be transferred to their hotels. The airline emphasized that baggage handling at international airports is managed by these third-party companies, over which Air Peace does not exercise direct control. Air Peace asserted that passengers were not abandoned and that communication was maintained throughout the disruption, while describing the "ongoing negative hounding" of the airline over the incident as unwarranted.
Bird strikes are a recognized hazard in global aviation and have increasingly contributed to delays and cancellations affecting Nigerian carriers, alongside broader challenges within Nigeria's aviation sector such as the ongoing aviation fuel crisis. The incident underscores the critical importance of adherence to safety protocols while also highlighting the tension between operational realities and passenger expectations for improved communication, timely assistance, and better handling of disruptions.
