BREAKING: Tinubu Authorizes Massive 30-80% Salary Hike For Armed Forces

President Bola Tinubu has approved a substantial salary increase for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, ranging between 30 and 80 per cent. This significant decision, announced by the Presidency, is aimed at enhancing troop welfare, boosting morale, and strengthening ongoing efforts to combat insecurity across the country. It also serves as a crucial recognition of the immense sacrifices made by military personnel in their duty to the nation, reinforcing the administration’s unwavering commitment to national security.

The new pay package, expected to benefit approximately 250,000 personnel, is structured to provide varying levels of increase based on rank. Officers from the rank of brigadier general up to general will receive a 30 per cent salary increment. Personnel holding ranks from colonel down to warrant officer are set to benefit from a 50 per cent increase. The most significant increment, an 80 per cent raise, is allocated to personnel from private to staff sergeant. This new salary structure will take effect from September 1, 2026, a detail confirmed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Financially, this approval is projected to raise the annual salary bill for Armed Forces personnel from N660 billion to N924 billion, reflecting the scale of the government's investment in its military. President Tinubu emphasized that this move is part of his administration’s broader security agenda, which also includes modernizing the armed forces through the provision of improved weapons and advanced technological equipment. He firmly stated, “The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.”

Reiterating his administration's resolve, President Tinubu stressed the fundamental link between national development and a secure environment. He affirmed, “Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians.” He urged servicemen to perceive this gesture as a profound demonstration of the government's appreciation for their dedication and sacrifices. “I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he added.

The announcement of these salary increases comes as the Nigerian Armed Forces continue to confront significant security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, in various regions of the country. This strategic decision underscores the government's commitment to ensuring that its military personnel are adequately motivated and equipped to tackle these threats effectively.
