Daniel Craig's Casino Royale Returns to Cinemas for 20th Anniversary

Daniel Craig's first outing as James Bond is returning to cinemas this October, giving fans another chance to see Casino Royale on the big screen two decades after it reinvented the iconic spy franchise.

The 2006 film will return to UK cinemas from October 2, with Park Circus handling the anniversary theatrical release.

Released on November 17, 2006, Casino Royale introduced Craig as a younger and more physically vulnerable version of 007, following Bond as he earns his licence to kill and takes on financier Le Chiffre.

The film marked a major change in direction for the franchise.

Gone was much of the exaggerated gadgetry and lighter tone associated with some earlier Bond films, replaced by a more grounded story centred on Bond's violence, vulnerability and complicated relationship with Vesper Lynd.

The British Film Institute's retrospective on Casino Royale describes the film as a major reinvention of the character, reflecting the shift towards a more contemporary version of 007.

The approach paid off commercially.

Casino Royale earned more than $600 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Bond film at the time until Skyfall surpassed it in 2012.

Craig's performance also changed the conversation around Bond.

His casting had initially generated scepticism among some fans, but the actor's more physical and emotionally exposed interpretation quickly became one of the defining versions of the character.

His Bond was less interested in appearing invincible and more willing to show anger, fear, attachment and grief.

The anniversary screening arrives at an interesting moment for the franchise.

Craig's final Bond film, No Time to Die, was released in 2021, and the series is now entering a new era under Amazon MGM Studios following the company's agreement to take creative control of the franchise.

The next Bond film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, best known for films including Dune and Blade Runner 2049.

Amy Pascal and David Heyman are attached as producers, but Amazon MGM has not yet officially announced who will replace Craig as 007.

That uncertainty has kept casting speculation alive, with numerous actors linked to the role in entertainment media.

For now, however, audiences are being taken back to where Craig's Bond story began.

Twenty years after Casino Royale introduced audiences to a very different 007, the film is returning to cinemas as the franchise prepares to write its next chapter.
