Borno Bloodbath: 15 Soldiers Fall In Devastating Convoy Attack

At least fifteen individuals, including ten Nigerian soldiers and five members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, lost their lives in a deadly attack on a military convoy in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, last Saturday. The incident unfolded as troops were traversing a road connecting Gamboru Ngala to neighbouring Cameroon.

According to two soldiers who detailed the events anonymously, a pickup truck carrying military personnel struck a landmine. This explosive device is widely believed to have been planted by Boko Haram insurgents, resulting in the immediate death of eight soldiers within the vehicle. Following this initial explosion, gunmen launched an ambush on a second vehicle in the convoy, fatally shooting two additional soldiers and five members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, a group that actively supports military operations in the region.

The attack also left six soldiers wounded. These injured personnel were subsequently transported to Maimalari Military Hospital in Maiduguri to receive urgent medical treatment. The sources, who requested anonymity due to not being authorized to speak to the media, provided crucial details regarding the incident. When approached for comment, military spokesperson Captain Mohammed Goni declined to provide any information.

Borno State remains a critical flashpoint and the epicentre of a protracted insurgency plaguing northeastern Nigeria. This region is continuously destabilized by the activities of Boko Haram and its splinter faction, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). Despite ongoing and sustained military operations aimed at quelling the unrest, both extremist groups persist in launching attacks against military personnel and civilians alike, frequently employing tactics such as roadside explosives and ambushes across the northeastern parts of Nigeria and along its borders.

This recent tragedy closely followed another significant assault just the previous week. In that incident, suspected Boko Haram fighters were responsible for killing at least ten soldiers and wounding at least twenty others during a coordinated attack on an army base, also located within Borno State. These successive attacks highlight the persistent security challenges and the severe threat posed by insurgent groups in the region.
