Former Delta Governor Uduaghan's Passing Shocks Political Class, Tributes Pour In

Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, the distinguished former Governor of Delta State, South-south Nigeria, passed away on the morning of Monday, October 19, at the age of 71. The somber announcement was made by Toju Uduaghan on behalf of the family, expressing profound sorrow and acknowledging the immeasurable loss to his family, the people of Delta State, and Nigeria at large. The family described him as a beloved father, brother, uncle, and respected patriarch whose presence enriched many lives, promising to cherish his memory and enduring legacy.

A seasoned public servant, Dr. Uduaghan's career was marked by significant contributions to Delta State. He served as Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003, then as Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007. His pinnacle of service came with his two-term tenure as Governor of Delta State, from 2007 to 2015, during which he spearheaded various developmental initiatives. Throughout his years in public service, he demonstrated a strong commitment to human and infrastructural development, and even after leaving office, he remained a prominent figure in the state's political and socio-economic landscape, contributing to the sustenance of democratic governance.

Tributes have poured in from across the nation, highlighting his impactful leadership and dedication. President Bola Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences, describing Dr. Uduaghan as a public servant whose leadership was devoted to Delta State’s development and service to the nation. President Tinubu urged Deltans to draw strength from the late governor’s years of service and the enduring relationships he built. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori mourned him as a detribalised leader whose contributions to the state's infrastructure and overall development would be remembered beyond ethnic considerations, leaving a significant mark on the state.

Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, representing Delta South Senatorial District, profoundly acknowledged Dr. Uduaghan as his political father, leader, and benefactor. Senator Thomas credited Uduaghan with charting his public service journey, including his appointment as chairman of Isoko South Local Government Area and later as the first executive chairman of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue. He emphasized Uduaghan’s exceptional ability to nurture talent and invest in people, beyond just building infrastructure.

Other prominent figures also offered their respects. Former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei, praised Uduaghan as a calm, purposeful, and visionary leader. Ochei specifically highlighted the administration's "Delta Beyond Oil" initiative, which aimed to diversify the state's economy and lay the foundation for sustainable development. He also cited Uduaghan's crucial contributions to peace and security in the Niger Delta, advancements in maternal and under-five healthcare, education, scholarships, and significant infrastructure projects, including the Asaba International Airport and extensive road networks. Dr. Festus Goziem Okubor, who served as Uduaghan's Chief of Staff, expressed deep grief for his former principal, acknowledging him as a leader and mentor whose footprints time cannot erase, and cherished the privilege of serving under him.

Dr. Uduaghan's administration was characterized by a relentless pursuit of developmental strides aimed at improving infrastructure, healthcare delivery, and the overall welfare of Deltans. His commitment to institutional development and good governance was evident through his promotion of dialogue, consensus-building, and cooperation among various state institutions. He was celebrated for his ability to nurture talent and spur meaningful development, leaving behind a rich legacy of public service and human capital investment.

It is worth noting that Dr. Uduaghan had previously faced false reports of his death circulating on social media in June, which were promptly debunked by his media aide, Henry Unini. At that time, Unini confirmed the former governor was alive and recuperating from health challenges, while cautioning against the spread of unverified information. Despite these prior health concerns, his eventual passing on October 19 marks the end of an era for Delta State and Nigeria, leaving a void in its political and socio-economic landscape.
