South Africa Tourism Boom Drives Millions of Visitors and Nearly One Million Jobs

South Africa’s tourism industry is rapidly becoming one of the country’s strongest economic pillars, directly supporting nearly one million jobs nationwide. Government figures show the sector sustained about 954,000 direct jobs in 2024, with tourism now responsible for one in every eighteen jobs in the country.
Officials also revealed that one tourism-related job is created or maintained for every thirteen international visitors entering the country. International travel to South Africa has continued to surge, with 10.5 million tourists recorded in 2025 and over 2.9 million arrivals already logged in the first quarter of 2026 alone.
Domestic tourism has also remained strong, with South Africans spending R111.6 billion on local travel, surpassing international visitor spending. The government says this balance between local and foreign tourism is helping build a more resilient and sustainable industry.
To maintain the momentum, South Africa has introduced faster digital visa approvals for travelers from countries including China and India, while also expanding international flight connections. Major investments are also being directed toward destination marketing, heritage tourism, and business events expected to inject billions into the economy.
Authorities now aim to increase annual tourist arrivals to 15 million while creating even more direct and indirect jobs through the sector’s continued growth.
