Bombshell Allegations: Ex-Disney CEO Bob Chapek Claims Iger Orchestrated 'Relentless Campaign' to Oust Him

Former Disney CEO Bob Chapek has publicly claimed that his predecessor-turned-successor, Bob Iger, orchestrated a "relentless three-year campaign to push me out" after initially appointing him to the top executive position. These allegations are detailed in excerpts from Chapek's upcoming book, "Behind the Castle Walls," which were published by Vanity Fair. Chapek asserts that the manner of his dismissal, occurring on a Sunday just before a major company event, made it appear as though he had committed a serious offense, fostering suspicion among outsiders.

Chapek initially took over as Disney CEO in February 2020, hand-picked by Iger. However, his tenure was cut short when the Disney board removed him in November 2022, following what were described as a series of missteps, and subsequently reinstated Iger. Iger himself later stepped down as CEO in March, with former parks head Josh D'Amaro taking the helm. Chapek's narrative paints a picture of immediate regret on Iger's part following the appointment, which then allegedly escalated into a sustained effort to undermine his leadership.

In his book, Chapek states, "From day one as CEO, I had respected the board’s decision to have him remain as executive chairman, directing creative endeavors and overseeing the transition until late 2021. I’d always made it clear I had big shoes to fill. But I’d never expected to endure a drawn-out, purposeful undoing of my leadership." He recounts specific instances that he believes exemplify Iger's concerted efforts against him. One such event detailed is Iger's retirement party, where Chapek claims he was the target of a "snide" joke about his Indiana upbringing and was conspicuously overlooked when Iger concluded his speech without acknowledging him as his successor. Chapek describes the moment as a deliberate slight, indicating Iger's inability to even remain neutral during the transition.

Furthermore, Chapek alleges that while he was working to navigate the company through the severe financial challenges of the COVID-19 shutdown, exacerbated by the substantial debt from the Fox deal, Iger "seemed to spend his time finding ways to politically outmaneuver and undermine me." He specifically highlights the backlash over Disney's stance on Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill as an incident where Iger publicly intervened in a way Chapek believes was intended to negatively impact his image and leadership. Chapek suggests that Iger "fueled an ego-driven power struggle" as Chapek pushed for bold streaming strategies aimed at transforming Disney into a streaming media powerhouse.

In response to these claims, Disney declined to comment, and Iger also declined to comment via a representative.
