Black Stars' AFCON Battle: Fury, Pride, and a Nation's Rally After Cote d'Ivoire Defeat

Ghana's Black Stars commenced their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to arch-rivals Côte d'Ivoire in Bouaké on Thursday evening. The Elephants secured all three points with goals from Malick Yalcouye, who struck a powerful shot from outside the box, and Franck Kessie, who converted a second-half penalty. This loss delivered a significant setback to Ghana's aspirations for a winning start in Group C.

Despite the unfavorable outcome, Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz expressed satisfaction with his team's overall performance and fighting spirit. Following the game, Queiroz stated, "I have to say that I am very proud of my team, very proud of my players - the way they fought, the way they played, the way they fought against adversity." The Portuguese trainer acknowledged Côte d'Ivoire's ball possession at times but emphasized that his team created more clear-cut attacking opportunities. "At the end of the day, we created more opportunities, more open chances than Côte d'Ivoire. Unfortunately, we did not score. We had four clear opportunities to score in front of goal, but it didn't happen," he lamented.

Queiroz did not shy away from criticizing the officiating, particularly the penalty decision that allowed Côte d'Ivoire to double their lead. He vehemently questioned the call, which occurred after Abdul Fatawu Issahaku's attempt to win the ball saw Malick Yalcouye go to ground in the box. "That penalty is a joke. I just saw it on television. For those of you who can see it on television, it is a joke," Queiroz asserted at his post-match press conference. He added, "It was 1-0 down, and I don't think Côte d'Ivoire needed the referee to come inside the game and create an unbalanced situation." While congratulating Côte d'Ivoire, he remarked that congratulations should also extend to the referee for a decision he felt was against his team.

Looking ahead, Queiroz conveyed strong confidence for the return fixture against Côte d'Ivoire in Accra. He declared, "When Ivory Coast comes to Ghana, with all due respect, it will be our turn to win." The coach even referenced the historical head-to-head record between the two nations, confidently predicting, "So the score, as you said now, is 16–15, right? So in a couple of months it will be 16–16. I have no doubt about that, that we are going to win that game."

Player Brandon Thomas-Asante echoed the collective disappointment but called on Ghanaians to rally behind the team. Speaking to Agogo Sports Daily, Thomas-Asante acknowledged, "Actually, we are all Ghanaians, we are fans as well as players, we want to win these games so when we go to Gambia, we are going to put pressure and things right, by then we are at home and we now have got our people (fans) behind us, so we are going to give our all.” He stressed the importance of home fan support as the Black Stars aim to bounce back from their opening defeat.

With this initial defeat, the Black Stars currently sit at the bottom of Group C. Their immediate focus now shifts to their second Group C qualifier against The Gambia, scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, at the Accra Sports Stadium. This home fixture is crucial for Ghana to secure their first points of the campaign and get their qualification hopes back on track. The team is determined to make a strong push for a return to the Africa Cup of Nations, especially after missing the 2025 tournament in Morocco, which marked their first absence from the finals in over two decades.
