Bitcoin Bull Run Ignites: Investors Pour $1B into BTC ETFs

The sentiment around Bitcoin has shifted, with bulls seemingly making a return, largely attributed to significant inflows into U.S. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). According to Farside Investors data, these funds saw a substantial $999 million in new investment on a recent Monday, marking the largest single-day inflow since October 6, when over $1.2 billion was received and the leading cryptocurrency reached an all-time high of $126,080. This renewed interest comes as Bitcoin's price recently stood at $86,552, having scraped $87,330 on Monday, reflecting a nearly 13% surge over the past seven days.

U.S. Bitcoin ETFs, which received approval from the SEC in 2024, have opened new avenues for investors, particularly Wall Street firms, to gain exposure to Bitcoin. These firms can now readily purchase shares in funds managed by major players such as BlackRock, Fidelity, and Morgan Stanley. Historical data suggests that substantial investment in these funds often correlates with significant price movements for the cryptocurrency, a pattern observed on the aforementioned Monday.

Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart noted that the average ETF buyer is now in profit, as the estimated ETF cost basis surpassed $81.72 for the first time since January. Leading the charge in Monday's investment surge was BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin trust, which alone garnered $381.4 million. Following closely were the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF with $289.1 million and Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund, which attracted $238.8 million.

The renewed investor interest in Bitcoin is multifaceted, stemming partly from a cooling in the artificial intelligence (AI) stock rally. Additionally, an announcement from the U.S. Department of the Treasury in August, indicating plans to at least double the size of its liquidity-support buyback operations, played a pivotal role. Analysts have suggested that this strategic move by the Treasury led to a decrease in 30-year Treasury yields, weakened the U.S. dollar, and consequently enhanced the attractiveness of alternative assets like Bitcoin. This series of events contributed to Bitcoin experiencing its most robust performance in years.

Further reinforcing the positive outlook, a report issued on Tuesday by crypto market data firm CryptoQuant highlighted that Bitcoin has successfully crossed above its 365-day moving average. This technical indicator is widely regarded as a significant signal that the asset has moved beyond its bear market phase, suggesting a potentially sustained period of growth.
