Apple's Siri AI Poised for Paywall, Alarming Power Users
Apple's CEO Tim Cook announced potential paywalled features for the upcoming Siri AI upgrade, integrated with iCloud+ subscriptions. This move aligns with industry trends, as Apple addresses its AI development delays, leadership transition, and the impact of a global RAM shortage on hardware pricing.
In his final earnings call as Apple's CEO, Tim Cook revealed the company's long-awaited Siri AI upgrade might include paywalled features. Cook indicated that while plans are not finalized, users could potentially purchase additional compute for Siri AI through existing iCloud+ subscriptions, which provide expanded cloud storage. He stated, "We do believe there will be people that want to use [Siri AI] a lot, and so we will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud+, where people can buy up the stack on iCloud+, and we’ll see how the pickup for that is." This strategy mirrors that of other major AI providers like Anthropic and OpenAI, who offer limited free versions with upgrade options for more extensive usage. The enhanced Siri AI is currently available in the iOS 27 beta and is slated for a broader rollout this fall.
This transition comes at a pivotal moment for Apple, as John Ternus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, prepares to succeed Tim Cook. Apple has faced significant challenges in developing an advanced AI assistant, notably falling behind competitors. This delay led the company to license a custom Gemini model from its direct competitor, Google, to augment Siri's capabilities. Furthermore, the prolonged Siri AI overhaul resulted in Apple paying $250 million to settle a class-action lawsuit concerning how it marketed the iPhone 16's AI features.
Adding to these internal shifts, Apple, along with other hardware manufacturers, is navigating a challenging landscape due to an industry-wide AI-driven RAM shortage. This scarcity has driven up the cost of building hardware, prompting companies such as Meta, Samsung, Microsoft, and Sony to increase device prices. Apple itself raised the prices of its Macs and iPads last month, though it has not yet adjusted the pricing for its existing iPhone models.
