Anfield Exit Shockwave: Konate Departs Liverpool on Free Transfer!
French centre-back Ibrahima Konate is set to conclude his five-year career with Liverpool this summer, following the collapse of contract renewal talks. The club officially announced the 26-year-old's departure, confirming he will leave Anfield at the end of June when his current deal expires. Konate, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021, was unable to reach new terms on an extension.
Liverpool's official statement on their website read: “Ibrahima Konate will leave the club following the expiration of his contract this summer. The defender’s time at Anfield will come to a close at the end of June, marking the end of a five-year spell with the Reds.”
During his tenure on Merseyside, Konate made a significant impact, accumulating 183 appearances across all competitions and scoring seven goals. His time at the club was marked by considerable success, including winning the Premier League title in the 2024-25 campaign, the FA Cup, two Carabao Cups, and the FA Community Shield.
In a poignant farewell message directed at the Liverpool faithful, Konate expressed his regret at not having the opportunity to bid a proper goodbye on the pitch at Anfield. He reflected on his journey, stating, “I arrived five years ago as a young player carrying big dreams. Today, I leave with a lifetime of memories.”
Konate further articulated the immense privilege of representing the club: “Wearing this shirt has been a privilege. We’ve experienced incredible highs, difficult lows, trophies, battles, friendships for life, and heartbreaking losses — none more painful than saying goodbye to our brother Diogo.”
The France international also shared a deeply personal struggle, revealing, “Losing my father this year was one of the hardest periods I’ve ever faced. But through it all, my commitment to this club never wavered. In my darkest moments, I gave everything for this badge.”
He extended his gratitude to his teammates, coaches, staff, and most profoundly, the supporters. “Your love, your energy, your unwavering support — Anfield is a magical place, and I never took a single moment in front of you for granted. I’m deeply saddened I didn’t get the chance to say a proper goodbye at the last match. I didn’t know then that it would be my final time in this kit before you.”
Konate concluded his heartfelt message with an emotional promise: “This is not an easy farewell, but it’s time for a fresh challenge and a new page. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you all, and I will carry Liverpool with me wherever I go. See you again soon, inshallah.”
