AKA Murder Mystery: Brothers Charged as South Africa Mourns Rapper's Tragic Loss!

The tragic murder of South African rapper Kiernan Forbes, widely known as “AKA”, in February 2023 outside a restaurant in Durban, continues to reverberate through the nation. His close friend, celebrity chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane, was also killed in the incident. The case, which deeply shocked South Africa despite its high murder rates, saw a significant development with the recent extradition of two brothers, Siyabonga and Malusi Ndimande, from neighbouring Eswatini.
The Ndimande brothers were brought back to South Africa after a lengthy legal battle to prevent their return failed. They arrived at Durban’s international airport on a Tuesday, under heavy police guard and in shackles, a sight that reignited the painful wounds for AKA’s family and fans. They have been charged with the murders of both Forbes and Motsoane, as well as attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm, among other offenses.
The brothers will appear in court for a bail hearing on November 25, joining five other accused individuals already in custody. The broader case against all accused is set to resume in the high court in Durban next year. Authorities have described the attack on Forbes and Motsoane as a “coordinated hit,” believing Forbes was the primary target, and Motsoane an unintended victim. While progress in the investigation has been made, including a police spokesperson stating that one of the Ndimande brothers “maybe one of [those who] pulled the trigger and shot AKA,” the overarching motive and the identity of those who ordered the killing remain unclear.
For AKA’s family, the legal proceedings bring a complex mix of hope and sorrow. His father, Tony Forbes, expressed satisfaction with the investigative progress but underscored his desire for answers regarding the masterminds behind his son’s murder. Meanwhile, his mother, Lynn Forbes, openly shared her raw and profound grief on Instagram following the suspects' arrival. Overwhelmed with emotion, she posted an image with her son, articulating her heartbreak and exhaustion. Her poignant words, “If you were the one coming home today … that would be justice for me,” captured the essence of her crushing grief and endless longing for her son. She added, “Everything else is just process,” indicating that true justice feels incomplete without AKA’s presence. Her post further conveyed, “This South African air is suffocating today … I cannot breathe 💔,” revealing the immense pain and emotional toll. This public display of sorrow resonated deeply with fans, who quickly offered messages of love and support, acknowledging her unbearable pain and the enduring legacy of AKA.
Kiernan Forbes was a highly celebrated hip-hop artist in South Africa, having released three solo albums and collaborated with notable performers, including Nigeria’s Burna Boy. His absence remains a heavy weight, and while the pursuit of justice continues, his mother’s grief remains a permanent fixture.
