Afcon Uproar: Controversial Refereeing Decisions Mar Bafana Bafana Clash Against Egypt

Egypt secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Bafana Bafana (South Africa) in their Afcon 2025 Group B clash, a result that significantly impacts South Africa's chances of progressing to the knockout stage. Following this defeat, Bafana Bafana now face a stern challenge, needing to beat neighbours Zimbabwe in their final group game to qualify.
The decisive match took place on Friday, December 26, in Agadir, Morocco, where the seven-time African champions, Egypt, overcame South Africa. The solitary goal of the game came late in the first half from Egyptian captain and talisman Mohamed Salah, who coolly dispatched a penalty kick.
The penalty incident unfolded after a video assistant referee (VAR) check, with Burundian referee Pacifique Ndabihawenimana awarding the spot-kick to the Pharaohs. South African fullback Khuliso Mudau was adjudged to have fouled Salah in the box, after the Mamelodi Sundowns defender's flailing hand struck the attacker's face. While the decision was debatable, particularly regarding any intent from Mudau, the advantage was ultimately given to the attacking team, leading to Salah's successful conversion.
Adding to the first-half drama, Bafana Bafana were handed a potential lifeline almost immediately after conceding. Just seconds before the half-time whistle, Egyptian player Mohamed Hany was sent off for stomping on Teboho Mokoena's foot, marking his second yellow-card transgression. This left Egypt to battle for the remainder of the game with ten men.
