AFCON 2025 Squad Uproar: Chelle's Super Eagles List Ignites Player Disappointment and Ultimatum
)
The build-up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco is fraught with high expectations and significant challenges for the Nigerian Super Eagles. Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has issued a demanding ultimatum to newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle: guide the team to the AFCON final, or his tenure will be deemed a failure. Gusau, speaking on Eagle FM, stressed that anything less than a final appearance for the 47-year-old Malian tactician would be unacceptable, a clear indicator of the immense pressure on Chelle and the squad.
This "final-or-nothing" mandate comes amidst controversy surrounding Chelle's appointment and his initial squad selections. Despite granting Chelle complete autonomy over team selection and tactical decisions, Gusau's public declaration amplifies the pressure. Nigeria, a three-time continental champion, last reached the final in 2013, and has since faced a frustrating period of underachievement, including a disappointing group-stage exit in 2021 and a heartbreaking second-place finish in 2023.
Chelle's squad announcement for AFCON 2025 has already generated discussion, featuring five new faces while notably omitting several experienced players. Among the significant setbacks are recent injuries and international disappointments affecting key Nigerian players.
Striker Victor Boniface has suffered another knee injury, ruling him out of Werder Bremen's upcoming Bundesliga clash against VfB Stuttgart, just days after being excluded from Nigeria's final AFCON squad. This compounds a difficult season for Boniface, who has struggled with fitness issues and is yet to score for Bremen since his loan move from Bayer Leverkusen. The severity and timeline for his return remain unclear, adding to Bremen's growing injury list.
Similarly, Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is sidelined with an injury that has also kept him out of the AFCON squad and an upcoming Premier League match. Despite his personal disappointment, Awoniyi has called for national unity and unwavering support for the Super Eagles, urging respect for Coach Chelle’s selection decisions, stating, "Once the coach brings out the list, he knows what he wants."
Defender Ola Aina made a bittersweet return to competitive football for Nottingham Forest's academy side, playing for over an hour in a 2-1 victory over Millwall, just 48 hours after his omission from the AFCON squad. Aina had been out for four months since a hamstring injury picked up during Nigeria's World Cup qualifier against South Africa. His decision to play for the academy underscores his professionalism and determination to regain match fitness. This comeback, marked by resilience, demonstrated his quality despite the personal blow of missing AFCON 2025, where new right-back options were introduced.
In contrast, Blackburn Rovers defender Ryan Alebiosu received his first senior international call-up, making it into Chelle's final squad, potentially filling the void left by Aina's unavailability. Blackburn expressed pride in Alebiosu's progress but also disappointment at losing a key player during a crucial stage of their Championship season. Alebiosu, who has started all 19 of Blackburn's league matches, is expected to miss up to seven club fixtures if Nigeria makes a deep run in the tournament, before joining the squad for a friendly against Egypt.
Bayer Leverkusen's head coach Kasper Hjulmand commented on Nathan Tella's exclusion from the final AFCON squad. Tella, who was on the provisional list, was not included after recently returning from a hip injury. While Hjulmand acknowledged the strategic advantage for Leverkusen in retaining Tella, he sympathized with the player’s personal disappointment, who had hoped to be part of the Super Eagles campaign after making his competitive debut in November 2023.
As the Super Eagles prepare for AFCON 2025, drawn in Group C with Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda, the blend of NFF's ambitious mandate, coach Chelle's challenging squad decisions, and the fitness struggles of key players creates a highly scrutinized environment. The countdown to Morocco has begun, with Nigerian football fans eagerly anticipating a return to continental glory under immense pressure.
