AFCON 2025 Shock: Senegal Reigns Supreme, Moroccan Stars Dominate Awards

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 culminated in a thrilling final on Sunday night, witnessing the Teranga Lions of Senegal clinch their second prestigious title. In a fiercely contested match held at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah, Senegal defeated the host nation, Morocco, with a decisive 1-0 victory.
The final was a spectacle of high-octane football, with both teams attacking relentlessly while meticulously maintaining their tactical formations from the initial whistle. The game's intensity escalated dramatically in stoppage time when a goal for Senegal was controversially disallowed by the referee. Just four minutes later, further drama unfolded as Morocco was awarded a contentious penalty.
This decision sparked outrage among the Senegalese players, who were initially instructed by coach Pape Thiaw to leave the pitch. After a tense ten-minute standoff, they returned to resume play. Morocco's hopes rested on Real Madrid superstar, Brahim Díaz, who stepped up to take the penalty. However, his attempted Panenka was comfortably saved by Edouard Mendy, much to the jubilation of the Senegalese side, denying Morocco a potential second title.
With the score still level, the match proceeded into extra time. It was during this period that the Teranga Lions truly showcased their unwavering determination, confidence, and exceptional mentality. Just four minutes into extra time, Pape Gueye delivered a powerful strike from outside the box, securing the crucial leading goal for Senegal. Following this goal, Morocco intensified their efforts to find an equalizer, but they were met with a resolute and stout Senegalese defense.
After 120 minutes of exhilarating football, the match concluded 1-0 in favor of Senegal, solidifying their status as the Kings of Africa.
Following the final whistle, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the individual award winners for AFCON 2025, with no Nigerian players featuring on the distinguished list.
Despite his penalty miss in the final, Morocco's Brahim Díaz earned the Golden Boot, finishing as the tournament's top scorer with an impressive tally of five goals. Morocco was also honored with the Fair Play Award, recognizing their exemplary conduct and discipline throughout the competition. The Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper was presented to Moroccan shot-stopper Yassine Bounou, who recorded a tournament-high five clean sheets.
Finally, the prestigious Player of the Tournament award was bestowed upon Senegal's talisman, Sadio Mané. At 33 years old, the former Liverpool star demonstrated exceptional performance and tireless effort throughout the competition, carrying his team to the championship. This marks Senegal's second AFCON title, a triumph they will prepare to defend in 2027.
