Addis Ababa Emerges as East Africa's Conference Capital with Record Tourism Growth

Addis Ababa is rapidly transforming into a leading tourism and business destination, driven by major urban renewal projects and strategic investments in infrastructure. According to the Addis Ababa Tourism Commission, the Ethiopian capital hosted more than 221 international conferences during the recently concluded fiscal year, up from over 150 recorded in the previous year.

The growth highlights the city's rising profile in the global Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry and its increasing appeal beyond being a transit hub for international travellers.

Officials attribute the surge in tourism and conference hosting to Ethiopia's Corridor Development Project, which has modernised public spaces, expanded pedestrian walkways and bicycle lanes, and improved the city's overall visitor experience.

Addis Ababa Tourism Commission Commissioner Hunde Kebede described tourism as a strategic pillar of the city's economic reform agenda, noting that sustained investments and supportive policies are helping position the capital as a destination for both business and leisure tourism.

The transformation forms part of Ethiopia's broader efforts to diversify its economy and strengthen Addis Ababa's role as a centre for international diplomacy, tourism, and foreign investment.

Continued improvements in tourism infrastructure and visitor services are expected to further enhance the city's global competitiveness, as the government pursues its long-term vision of establishing Addis Ababa as one of Africa's premier destinations for international conferences and urban tourism.
